The AKG K712 Pro Support and Impressions Thread

So basically the K712s and Annies drivers are tuned differently? What would you say are the differences between the two? I've heard the old Annies personally.

I think both perform really similar, and differences are subtle, with that in mind I have found the famous bass boost (3dB) more prominent in the K712, making it a bit darker than the K702/65th... I believe the Annie has a more defined bass by the way... Both are really detailed and balanced.

I got a pair for $300 on amazon since they have a 15% off on them right now. I like em better than my K702's and they are so cool looking. Now I wanna get theK702 anniversary and a black Q701... Ha! besides my Audeze LCD-3F I think the AKG K7XX series are the neatest looking modern headphones.

The only downside is they still distort like the K702s in some songs like WYWH Shine on You Crazy Diamond.

Im now considering getting these over the HE500s. Are the K712s fatiguing at all? People seem to describe them as darker, but not sure if thats relative to the previous 7 series offerings. Also how do these fair with metal? They need to be an all arounder for me, which would consist of rock, metal, electronic, and jazz.

The fact that theyre significantly lighter and more comfortable than the he500 really sells me. If i get them, i plan on using the O2/ODAC. I saw a lot of comparison earlier in the thread, but wanted to see how thoughts have changed. Compared to the he500s, how does the bass/mids/treble compare (stronger/weaker per range) to the 500.

Theyre nearly $100 cheaper which makes them seem really competitive

I'm also considering to buy one, since I listen to metal a lot.

This thread is helping me a lot:

Basically, at its price range, is one of the best for metal. There is deep review with each metal genre, hope it helps.

I've never had distortion issues on the K712 nor the Q701. That is weird about the static. Sounds like there may be something wrong with them.

It must had been my Receiver because it is not doing that at all anymore. It was cold this morning so I'm now pretty sure it was the componants in my Marantz 4270 not warmed up.

AKGs are extremely sensitive to the system in my experience, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's something like that. It likely was the problem, I sometimes have to get my Lyr 2 to warm up a little before it sounds like it should.

Does anyone have any experience with these cans on a Fiio x5 player (no external amp)? From the many reviews I've read it should be fine since x5 is pretty strong (drive up to 150 ohms headphones).

If your listening at higher volumes you may need to consider or at least try a different amp, the AKG K700 series can be fairly demanding  and easily exhaust the  amount of current on hand ....causing distortion on dynamic peaks.

K712 with my Pioneer SX-1050. They really come to life on this monster. I'm enjoying this K712 as much as my LCD-3.

Ever try connect your LCD 3 or K712 directly to the speaker tab? (your amp is powerful, may need to add resistor). I am using my Yamaha 95wx2 stereo amp and Topping TP60 direct feeding LCD 2.2 and K701 (with resistor)

Will the Soundblaster Z  be enough to power a K712 or would I also need a DAC and a headphone amp? I was thing of buying a Schiit stack if not but want the SBZ for  the surround sound in games.

If you still wish to use the surroud in your exsisting Soundblaster, you can get an external amplifier only and use the DAC built in the Soundblaster. That will help safe cost too!

Hope it helps

No need, most older receivers and pre-amps did exactly that, the headphone out was the speaker output but with resistors which is why the AKGs sing with most of them.
