The HD660, HD440, HD330 use a different cup size then the HD-681
AKG K240/241/270 Velour ear pads should fit your HD681 and they will only cost you $46.
Check with the website AudioHipster, they might carry low cost Velour ear pads for the HD681.

I'm thinking of picking up a pair of 668B's but wondering what the bass is roughly like. Do they respond well to EQ? I currently have a pair of HARX900's but they are a little old and the headband is being held together with zip ties one side.

It's either these or a pair of XB500's

The 668b's will have much less bass then your ha rx900's. But they have a lot for an open headphone. And I personally think a harx900 to an XB would be a downgrade.

The Samson SR850 (clone of 668b) is said to have a little bit more bass because of tighter clamping pressure but I'm not sure it's very much

Thanks, I'm leaning towards the 668b's as I could fix up the RX900 and then there would be no point of having two pairs of bass heavy headphones.

I'm also not overkeen on the look of the XB's headband.

That settles it, the 668b's it is :D

In case you're interested the 681's go much deeper in the bass department, have a more aggressive sound, but sound noticably thinner and a lil' bit tinny.

Also, you might want to save up for some new ear pads for the Superlux, the stock ones get sweaty and sticky. I got these. http://www.amazon.com/Sound-Blaster-Warcraft-Headset-Cushions/dp/B004N8J64Q/ref=sr_1_16?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1341903151&sr=1-16&keywords=world+of+warcraft+headset

How well do those fit the 668/681? I have a 681, which I did solderdude's filter mod #1 to.

They are sort of difficult to get on, but they do fit once they are on.

If you take the cushions off your 681 now you'll notice on the bottom there is a 'lip' on the pads which wraps around the headphones.  The ones on these pads are slightly shorter which makes them quite a bit difficult to get on. But it is possible with some effort and it will be worth it because once they are on they are a good fit. I used tape to temporarily hold parts of the 'lip' and once it was fully wrapped around the headphones I took the tape off.

I read that the DT700 ear pads work with the Samson SR850 and the Superlux HD668B using the ear pads of the DT990, but someone know if the diameter from Samson SR850 and Superlux HD668B is different?

The samson SR850 the diameter of ear pad must be: 4" (102mm) with opening 2.4" (60mm)

Here observe the beyerdynamic DT 990 ear pad on the HD668B:

These must work with HD668B, Imagewise, but i'm not sure:
