i believe there was a canadian head-fi meet in a coffee house that these cans showed up for (two meets actually, right?) and i forget the exact impressions, but they weren't good.

I used to sell them, or more accurately, I worked at a store that sold them. I think we were forced to carry them if we wanted to sell the extremely popular Stanton cartridge line. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but they were pretty nasty. If somebody wanted to listen to them we just kept our mouths shut.

I didn't think they were too bad, at least as far as vintage dynamic cans go. Granted, they weren't very good either. But I bought them based solely on their looks anyways.

The speakers inside look really old fashioned. They have that strange square-ish frame thing on top the the magnet structure typical of full size speakers of that time period. I'll see if I can find a pic.

Yeah, these should be old-style paper cone drivers, like all dynamic headphones had until Sennheiser revolutionized the field by popularizing the HD414's dome-shaped microphone-cartridge drivers, which is what they all use now. (and it was also the first major open headphone at the same time!)

oops, open dynamic, that is. Or we could construe 'major' to mean first multi-million selling open headphone. Surely there were ten times more HD414 made (with variants) than every model of Stax put together.

I dunno. Even the rather pricey Omega 2s seem to have sold 50,000+ units. Just how many 414s did Sennheiser sell?

I have never thought of fantastic sound when the name stanton was brought up, and i'm glad to hear this because otherwise i might feel slightly guilty about retro-fiting them.

I need to look at some drivers though. Anyone have any suggestions? I'll give a look at the RS-1's

x2. I was thinking either leave them this colour or perhaps a flat cherry red.
