Sorry I've taken so long to get back to you. Well the PSBs are only a little more expensive than the HP100s (if you go for the non noise-cancelling PSBs), and the price difference between them and the Onkyos is far less than the sound difference.

Comfort-wise: They sometimes feel uncomfortable on my left ear (which is bigger than my right ear) after a couple of hours, but I find the Onkyos extremely uncomfortable straight away, so in my eyes the PSBs are vastly more comfortable.

I'll do a little comparison in the Next days: Soundmagic HP100 VS Shure SRH440 with 840 Pads. The shure sound much better in every way, comfortwise the soundmagic wins only because of the better headband. But thats easilly moddable on the shure. Thats why i sold my HP100 to keep the shure. Also the shure has a better cable. The HP100s cable is too short.

Just got my pair that I bought from a fellow head-fier. Initial impressions, surprisingly similar to the AKG K141 MKii's signature-wise, which have been my only headphone in use for 18-24 moths (still adore it). Still quite different, but the reviews led me to believe the difference would be a like comparing mosques and synagogues, as opposed to comparing cathedrals and basilicas (you know, because music IS a religion

Anyway, out of the DX50: The bass goes deeper, there isn't as big a perceived bump at the 80Hz-ish area, and the mids are not quite as harsh. And the sound-stage is........ different. Hard to put into words as of yet. I will probably attempt to do so at a later point when I am actively not studying. The mids are probably, to me, the part which account for the proximity to the K141's. And the trebles have a notably different presentation.

Ahh, fair enough.

Without exceeding the price range of $250, what's a headphone you would recommend that's closed and beats the SM HP100 and 200?

This is kind of a weird headphone for me. While it has a nice balance to the sound, I don't like how it has a sort of icy tone to it. Not to mention, the bass is unlike anything I've heard before. With most bass oriented headphones, it feels as though the entire range of low frequency has been bumped. With the HP100, it feels as though there is a very narrow bass spike. I find it fatiguing with most music I listen to, although, in itself it's got quite nice extension. I also still don't get who at Soundmagic thought that mirrors with grids would be a good idea for the earcups. I'm not even getting scratches, more like heavy discoloration due to smudges. Coiled cable was a bad idea too. If you pull to extend, it either pulls what you have it plugged into, or it pulls them out of position on your head.

They're a touch pricey for me in Australia.

About the HP100.. How do you say the 3D imaging of the headphones are like?
