He was probably referring to a flip phone. My brother worked at UCLA on Arpanet back in the early 70s and they had the same computer that NASA had. I visited it many times and played games on it. I don't remember exactly but I think it had a 5 megahertz processor and 15 megabytes of RAM.
That makes sense....my first cell phone was the size of a Tallboy beer can and did nothing more than allow me to make phone calls.I am pretty sure my current phone has more going on than my computer from 5 years ago.....the tech on this stuff is growing exponentially.

Just a moment to remember Clark Stanley, the Rattlesnake King who brought Snake Oil to the world.

I came to self roast myself as I like to do when I've been especially stupid, and noticed I forgot to go check the post you suggested to be pinned. done.
now my "I'm so clever" moment:
I'm getting hungry, I go put some food on a tray, put an effervescent supplement thingy in a glass of water(I apparently lack magnesium), and come back at my computer to see the end of the anime I was watching(like the adult I am).
maybe 10seconds later, I notice a noise on my left. total panic. hermagerd!!! my speaker is broken!!!! I pause the anime(oni chan yamete), now I'm alone with that noise and I'm devastated by how obviously real it is. I get up to put my head against the speaker to check if the noise comes from the tweeter or the big frisbee, or both, and realize the noise seems to come from under me, I look down, it's the effervescent tablet in the glass of water almost completely dissolved by now.

I hate that. Noises and sounds that creep in while I'm listening to music. I am experiencing it slightly differently though in that I am currently living with a broken body. Couple of slipped discs in my back, crooked pelvis and a nice little nerve that goes from my left toe to my back messed up beyond recognition. Anyway recently my physician has made progress getting my back to make noises I never thought a human body could make. Afterwards though it's as if certain muscles re-awake after years of inactivity and speaking about noise, the ones that that come with this are downright incredible - managing to mix in with my music. Sorta like the sounds you get from ooooold wooden ships that creek and croak and some times even seem to be breathing (through some weird almost membrane-like internal speaker).
Sounded pretty good with Faust IV yesterday evening - rather complemented the anthemic first track 'Krautrock'. Not at all that strange come to think of it as the track already sports this larval-like propelling feeling that seems to croak and creek in a dirty electronic fashion.

But more importantly, it's friday! I could swear that someone or something added a workday this week. It felt like friday yesterday.

I had a mysterious beep in my kitchen that would beep every hour on the dot. It was one of those sounds that you can't tell what direction it comes from. First, I thought it was the microwave, then the stove, then perhaps something in a drawer. It went on for a couple of weeks. When I had time, I'd set an alarm just before it beeped and I would position myself at a different spot in the kitchen to see where it was. Finally, I did that standing in front of the door to the garage. It was in the garage. Apparently to get a deal on internet, I had to take a cable landline telephone, which I didn't use. I had them just install it in the garage. It had a battery pack that had gone bad and beeped every hour to remind me to change it. I unplugged the damn thing.

I have a beeping story, too.

I was renting a townhouse in the suburbs of Washington D.C. where there was an alarm system that was installed by the previous tenant, but not the actual owner of the residence, who was retired and spent most of their days travelling about the globe. The previous renter was supposedly a woman from Australia that had 2 young children and was working for some federal agency in secrecy. When she moved to a new residence, she left in quite a hurry and there was very little information about who she actually was or where she was going to next. The security alarm was not activated when I moved in, but the contract with the security company was with the woman that no longer lived at the townhouse and nobody could reach her. The info I had about her seemed to indicate that she was some sort of language translator that worked with the NSA, CIA, or FBI. In any case, she was gone and nobody knew where she could be reached or nobody was willing to tell me.

There were several devices set up all over the townhouse to activate the alarm if a door or window was breached, including motion detectors covering the main entryways. Even though the alarm was not activated, it was still live, and every time any door or window was opened the main alarm panel made several loud beeps, broadcasting to everyone within earshot that I was either coming, going, or simply opening a window to let in some spring air. Frustrated by the annoyances and being a bit of a tech geek, I went online and researched the model of the alarm panel and found a service option to deactivate the incessant beeping noise. Though, without the original alarm activation/deactivation code, not being the owner of the townhouse, and with the original person that was on record with the alarm system being MIA, all I could do was silence the beeping.

I enjoyed several months of bliss without a peep from the alarm system and had removed all of the lithium batteries from the numerous security devices located all around the townhouse. Then one day I heard that familiar beeping again about every 30 seconds. It sounded to me like the beeping was coming from the alarm panel. There was nothing on the LCD screen that indicated a problem was abound, though we had briefly lost power due to a thunderstorm the night before and I was thinking that perhaps that had reset the alarm beeping and it was trying to warn me that the batteries were low on the external security devices that covered each entryway.

Attempting to go by memory from months before to repeat the steps I researched to silence the beeping, I fumbled around with the security panel and inadvertently ACTIVATED the alarm to the townhouse. Luckily for me, I activated the alarm in a mode that was used for when the residence was at home, so the motion detectors were not tripped with me inside. I was terrified and stuck inside the townhouse with the alarm activated and the owners were on a trip to Alaska for a week.

To be continued....

I noticed a couple of things the last time I met with my "audiophile friends" aka friends that almost simultaneously discovered the brave new world of music through the simple purchase of a studio headphone...alright I may have been the original pusher as I was the first to shout 'heureka!' after having spent around a 100$ on a pair of mdr7506. Anyway I noticed how little new music they'd listened to over the last couple of years. It was almost as if they somehow simultaneously decided to use their cash on gear over the usual music purchases by new artists - y'know blindbuying something on a whim and then being introduced to something entirely new - a new style/a whole new sonic universe.
Sadly though this facet to our friendship seemed to have been replaced by the new kid on the block: sound quality!
Scrutinizing sounds and frequencies - comparing stuff ad nauseum sniffing out the tiniest difference between headphones...and the sad thing is that I was there only months ago myself! Only to realise that when I went into this scrutinizing mode and dived deeper into fx the highs of x headphone the bass disappeared or some other nuances blurred and vice versa. Furthermore the actual FEEL and intent of the music passed by me like a gust of wind leaving me wholly unaffected by its virtues.
I now discovered this in my friends and it was frightening to behold. Guys I used to EXPERIENCE music with - closed eyes - hell some times even climaxing together in a series of rough goosebumps inducing moments...merely through the power of music. 'Holy batman' I thought to myself 'these guys need to stop, sit back and listen to what Dave has to say'. David Gilmour first taught me about Goosebumps City back when I was a little kid. He shot me straight into the milkyway and I've been searching for the same trip ever since. He had the same effect on my friends' lives as I recall.
I hope I get them back from the other side at some point. Get them into music again - not just the purveyors of sound.

So I made a huge error recently. I brought up my lonely sub from the basement, bought a miniDSP, got the response on my couch sweet spot nice and flattish with the sub crossed-over right, bought a bit more amp to make things loud enough, and then foolishley listened to music on the setup. Now I get depressed sitting at work listening to headphones :frowning2: Anyone else make this kind of mistake?

you need to find the secret drug that makes people believe all the goodness of music is in the ultrasounds. or you can hit your chest in rhythm with the music. :sob:

Perhaps not to the same degree, but it is difficult for me to go back to headphones, as I much prefer my office stereo setup or surround sound system in the living room. The headphones that I prefer, to my ears, sound as close I have found to that of a stereo system. (Denon D5K)

At work, I have closed-back headphones that isolate rather well in the Mr. Speaker Mad Dog Fostex conversions. Though, nowadays I use headphones at work to keep outside noises from distracting me more than anything else.

I EQed my PM-3s to match the speaker response (which cured the harshness they have with certain material), but it didn't help. I've tasted the drug! Hoping the Realiser will do the trick, but is it even happening at this point...?

I feel the same way about movies. I have more time to watch movies on my iMac than I do dropping the screen on my projection system, but I find myself only watching TV shows on my computer because I feel like a movie would be wasted without having the big screen and surround sound of my theater.
