ah you were talking about the thing in the box.
They etched it differently on the headphone itself bud.
the box can be changed quickly, and probably cheaper using a stamp with 000001 to start it off, but the Headband is etched

Oh, I haven't reached for that box downstairs since the day I bought the headphone, approx. 2 years ago. I thought those 6-digit serials reported here referred to the headband. Still don't get it why they would use the zeroes inside the box though.

Could you please give me a few suggestions of headphone amps that compliment the MDR Z7 balanced and non balanced amps under 500.00? thank you
Unbalanced, I would recommend the Audioquest DragonFly Cobalt. Using it right now, and it's fantastic for this headphone (and the Z1R ).

Edit: Haven't used it, but the Mojo is on markdown across dealers. Shop around and you can get a good deal on a Chord Mojo. Could always expand it with wireless function if you want later on. This is unbalanced. I don't think balanced/unbalanced matters much with this headphone. I've tested the Cobalt against the TAZH1ES. Cobalt is very good. If you insist on balanced, DAP's with Pentaconn could be a good option.

Another suggestion could be the Schiit Asgard. Obviously after all these years the Asgard is now up to model three. I’m not experienced with the later models but own an Asgard One. Schiit amplifiers tend to be on the brighter analytical side which can be a benefit balancing some of the darker aspects of the MDR-Z7. Finding a used Asgard One comes in around $100.

You do need a DAC with em though.

Cheers!

if you're talking about Amp only, Drop THX789 just had a price cut, now down to 300 usd and they're unbeatable at that price range, easily end game amp if you look for accurate, transparent tuning, which IMO suit the Z7 quite well. (only clearly warm amp doesn't suit the Z7 IMO)
it has loads of power so future headphone upgrade is guaranteed to be driven to a great extend.

It’s nice to see people enjoying such an exquisite example of headphone art.

After using my Z7's for a good 5 months now, I'm certainly used to the sound and find it very pleasing. But you know what is really stark for me when wearing other headphones? How uncomfortable they are in comparison the the Z7. Holy Toledo, are these things comfortable. I can wear them for 3-4 hours and not feel any discomfort on my ears, my head, anywhere.

I put on my MDR-1000X noise canceling cans the other day to do garbage and recycling, and within 5 minutes I was like "aah! ears hurt! edges digging in!"

Anyway, just an observation.

Definitely, you won’t be disappointed with the Z1R either. Using those are like ear pillows. And when you’re feeling particularly indulgent, the Meze Empyreans are like an open back equivalent of the Z1R, and are incredibly comfortable as well.

the only change is probably size, the Z1R and Empyrean is way bigger than the Z7.
It's interesting how Sony manage to make the Z1R so light despite the apparent big size, it's only 50g heavier than Z7!

The MDR-Z1R has the Princess Leia profile going on big time. If anything the Z7 is miles better comfort wise concentrating on this aspect. IMO

yep so it's more limiting on case like using the headphone on a bed, which surprisingly the Z7 is comfortable on.
the 70mm may make it sound big, but it, like the other early 70mm MA900 is actually quite small in baffle size, it has smaller diameter than K702's and AD1000x'.

Looking to pull the trigger on this pair of headphones to compliment my Stax SR-L500. I'm basically buying it for a fully closed pair of heaphones with a dark sound signature with a lot of bass for my hiphop/bass centric music. Am I making the righ choice?
