If I could only have one of them it would be the IER but I would not want to have to choose just oneI'm in the market for headphones thinking about Sony IER-Z1R or MDR-Z1R

The 900mk2 is a good choice. The treble can be harsh but can be tamed with Eq. It's also good to pair them with warm amps, such as iFi, Schiit, Burson or some others. That sounds like the Focal radiance, actually I tend to the 900mk2 for my case,
Or here with 和楽器バンド
A good taste, bro!

I'll be joining the z1r scene soon. Have high hopes regarding all day comfort! Empyrean spoiled me in that regard.

The Meze is next for my collection Sennheiser HD 800 modified, Focal Utopia, Hifiman Susvara, Sony Mdr Zr1 and the Stax 009S.

Two very different sound signatures, ier is quite a bit more energetic with cleaner, faster bass, a lot of slam but perhaps not that booming big bass feel that the mdr has. I would say that ier takes the edge for the sparkly feel in the highs as well, mdr does get peaky at times but not as frequent or prevalent.I'm in the market for headphones thinking about Sony IER-Z1R or MDR-Z1R

Female vocals are better than male on the ier, with mdr I found all vocals to be quite satisfying, but keep in mind that mdr is considerably more laid-back so if you want details in your face then ier is the way to go.

Z1R is definitely all day comfy. I haven't tried the Empy, so I can't compare. But compared to the other headphones I've tried, Z1R is tied with the Dan Clark Aeon Closed X for comfort.I'll be joining the z1r scene soon. Have high hopes regarding all day comfort! Empyrean spoiled me in that regard.

Sadly this headphone is not for me.. It's a little too hot around the ears and i need a HP that's a bit more mid-forward. I really enjoyed the build and bass quality though

Perhaps a silly question but should the serie numbers match between box and headphones? Or did I receive the box of another pair?

Hmm interesting. My headphones says it's 481 while the box' number is 217.
Contacted the previous owner but he wasn't aware of any numbers he says...
