SONY NW-ZX700

Was going to wait until my next trip to Japan, but it is currently on sale on Amazon for $600 so I bit the bullet. The volume cap won't bother me, I'll be using the IER-M7 on this thing anyway

I have the US version, which I use with the IER M9. Plenty of power! It even drives my Focal Clear just fine.

So it's not that bad in the end

I ordered a Samsung ultimate 512 SD card, picking it up later today.

I have a curiosity tho. Do you use the DAP at home only or on the go as well?
I tend to use it at home only (or in the office, when I was working in the office) but never on the go/ transit/ etc. Main reason is that I tend to listen music in already silent environments, while focusing or reading. For transit I use the iPhone w/ apple music & APP and c'est la vie, but since I got the IER M9 makes me cry a little lol.
Also rarely taking the IEMs away, so they stay plugged almost forever. I saw some bad (B and C rank on e-earphones) 4.4mm jacks of IER M9.

Mostly on the go or travels, but also sometimes at home when I want something quick.

Other than that I prefer using desktop ones, one DAC/AMP at home (RME ADI 2), one in the office (Q15).

For me it's just simpler than having to plug and unplug everything everytime.

The yen went down. The price stayed the same (94.000¥ new). It’s crazy. I just came back from Japan and I felt like I was in Southeast Asia due to Yen’s devaluation. Family said it’s bad tho for them 😬

So in January 2023 I paid 3122 PLN/ $780. Now it would be 2500 PLN/ $620 for a new unit.

Crazy. Got the IER-M9 for 80,000¥ / $530

Got 60 kilo of osenbe on return for 25-30k yen 😆
And it will go up again. Basically buy as fast as possible. The EUR/YEN is 161 right now and the BOJ announced that they will intervent if this trend doesn*t change.

As people are expecting these interventions any minute, as soon there is a BOJ Meeting, the YEN drops by 5 points right before the meeting.

Just look how 3 months look without any intervention of the BOJ

So if someone thinking about buying one from Japan, do it as fast as possible. I'd recommend to import yourself as you save the up to 20% the ebay seller adds to the price (common, think about it, is registering at an forwarding service, those 5 minutes, really so much hassle that you are willing to pay someone 100€ or more to do it for you?)

Well, it just arrived. Did all the updates, disabled a lot of the google bloat, and installed OTOTOY and Apple Music as well.

Using a lexar 1tb card from my old zx507 - the chipped paint on it adds an extra dimension to your listening experience, especially if you are listening to an ATRAC or MP3 file :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Here is a quick size comparison to the old 507 and the A300 for those interested.

Congrats! Interesting, its not THAT much bigger than the ZX500, for some reason I thought it would be much larger.

I just thought about to sell my zx lineup. The 707 vs Am1 is like your top football club A squad vs B squad. Its rare they are playing the one league tier close. But then I remember the story of obtaining each one :) So hard.

Also, for a data point, I factory reset the player and am still running into it; so curious if it's a DAC conflict from the USB C out vs the headphone internal DAC. For reference I'm using the Dali IO-12s.

No issues when plugging in a USB-C Dongle Dac and then using 3.5mm out from that.

Update if anyone else comes across this.

It works in UAPP but not in Sony's default Walkman app. Damn shame, cause I like the Walkman app.

I use the A300 or A55 for my commuting and travel needs. Now since I have the 707, I'll be throwing in the 507 in the mix as well.

lol, I still have a majority of my old Sony DAPs, but I like collecting them in general

So my 707 died out of nowhere 🤣 🤣

It didn't want to turn on or charge (I tried all the usual Android reset tricks, etc), making it a fancy brick

I'm getting a replacement unit again in a couple of days, but if that turns out to be a dud as well, this thing isn't for me and I'll go back to my 507

This is the kind of thing scaring me off of importing. How was the volume for you in real world use before it died? I was looking at it strictly for IEMs and generally it seems like any IEM I'd listen to with it could easily be driven to 105-110db.

For less than 24 hours I had the thing, the volume was fine at home. I also took it out with me on a short train ride, and even with the loudness of the L train here, I was comfortably listening to music at the 80-90 volume range.

Thanks for letting me know. Which IEM(s) did you use if I may ask? Just the M7 you alluded to earlier? I totally understand why people would be dissatisfied with the lack of high gain, but every calculation I do indicates that it should be fine with many IEMs. I'd be looking to use the TS-316 at the moment, which should be able to get to just under 103db which of course is dangerously loud. It seems like the M7 is in that same ballpark.
