Never. I have two different balanced cables and the output from the balanced port is always perfect.

Hi,

I recently bought a fostex balanced cable (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B079997SSH/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) to use with my Sony mdr-7520 and zx300. There is noticeable hiss when I use this balanced setup. If I use the stock single-ended cable with zx300, there is barely any hiss.

Has anyone noticed hiss from the balanced output of zx300? Does burn-in solve the problem? Or the problem is with the cable?

Thanks!
I haven’t noticed any hiss with CA Andromeda in either SE or balanced. Could the cable be faulty?

What headphones do you use with this? Have tried sensitive headphones with the balanced output?

I use one cable with Sony MDR-Z7's and HiFiman HE4XX's. I use the other with my Meze 99 Classics.

I don't see how adding a cable to a headphone that has a single connection will make it balanced?

Unless internals of the jack are 3.5 TRRS on the Fostex and the Sony is the same?

Ya, pretty sure both sides would be using a common ground, thats how my shure 840 was before I rewired it. That would explain the hiss. Best not use that cable anymore, dont want to ground fault the zx300. Not sure if it has some internal protection against things like that, but, better safe than sorry.

I don't understand the theory behind it but both sony and lavricables sell balanced cable with a single connection.

http://www.lavricables.com/cables/reference-silver-sony-mdr-z1000-mdr-7520/). Sony mdr1am2 also has a single connection but comes with a stock balanced cable.

I thought 3.5 TRRS is a standard and manufactures just implement it.

If your headphone supports 3.5 TRRS at the cups then thats good. I believe most use TRS, only time with 4 poles if the cable has a mic. I'm not well versed on your cans/lots of full size cans to know 100%

You are right. I may need to rewire the hp or replace the TRS with a TRRS jack.

Thanks.

Ahh, that explains what you are encountering. There is no single standard for 3.5mm TRRS, as you will see from the chart below. In addition, there are TRRS cables made to accommodate a TRS for audio, and the other lead is for the microphone. I used the Sony 3.5mm TRRS pseudo balance (separated grounds, and not a differential signal) on a ZX2, and the same cable works fine on the WM1x 3.5mm. Cables wired for other configurations will not work properly, as you can see from the chart that there are many different wiring options.
