These quotes make me think that this guy probably never gave the ZX2 a listen and is simply poking fun at the DAP because of the hefty price tag. And I don't understand why he thinks that a run-of-the-mill smartphone can keep up with the ZX2 in terms of sound quality.

May be you should send him a cassette tape Walkman to compare it with the ZX2, then may be review will better.

Knowing my luck lately I would have got a lemon from Japan, at least I have a local warranty.

You are right, it's always been like this, still loving this DAP, sounds great through the P7, they really have great synergy together, I've never heard these headphones sound like this. The bass is controlled and tight. And what a brilliant sound stage.
Very happy with this rig.

All the best units go to Japan then the rest is filtered out to the remainder of the globe. Most countries export what is termed 'Export Grade' meaning the best that they produce. Japan is different in that they keep the best for themselves, it's a cultural divide. The quality difference here is very small as they pride themselves on making a superior product. The chances of you getting a lemon are extremely small to non existent.

^ I very much doubt Japan gets select units, my ZX1 from Japan had a dead pixel on the lcd, not so special is it, while my second ZX1 from Aussie stock was perfect.

I would agree with you if you said that about 5-10 years ago, back then Japan only exclusive product are not sold internationally, and they usually have the MIJ mark, now only items with the MIJ mark has the exceptionally good quality and a high price tag.

This guy has little to no knowledge of music....left alone being any kind of music enthusiast.....worse, he is not anywhere even close to being close to appreciate musics and instruments. If I would have to guess, this guy would be those who listen to the bass only from those rap tracks....such as.....xxxxx....xxxxx......x...x.x...xxxx.....wam wammmm.....bwammmmm....,bbbbwwwwammmm.....brung....brung......bbbbbwammm.

And so, to publish such guys reviews with a wrongful taste and wrong kind of device is wrong....and the website shall discredit it, pull it off, or else risking their reputation. This is worse than the level of "the God must be crazy" movie with that actor and the can of coke.

I never said the Japanese stock is perfect and will never break down, they receive the cream of the crop. In any case one example is therefore statistically irrelevant.

I am not referring to 'Japan only' products. I am referring to any product in general that gets sold both in Japan and internationally. In the case of the ZX2 when built and tested all units get a 'quality' ranking for lack of a better term. The units that are above a certain set level go to Japan, the rest to global Earth . Remember Electronics are based on caps, resisters, chips and so on and are made in batches. Some are better than others and therefore perform better. If you buy a certain computer CPU you can overclock it higher than an identical unit on another silicon wafer or batch, less impurities and so on. There is an old joke for people into cars, never buy a car made on Monday morning.

I have a problem with DNLA. I can play files off my server fine, but contents of an 'album' are mixed up and do not play in order even though all songs are numbered properly. This can be irritating if you want to listen to an album in the order it's supposed to be. Anyone have any ideas?

...seems that files are sorted alphabetically if you search by 'artist' then 'album'. If you start searching with 'album' the songs are sorted properly. The problem here is that it takes a long time to find an album if you have thousands on the server. I scrolled for over a minute to get to 'G'. (Using wd mycloud)

ok you love your baby and hate anybody who criticizes it, like a reasonable human identifying a little too much with his gears. but do you really need to ruin that guy with cheap unrelated blows and insult anybody who likes rap in the process? let's breath an relax a sec.
 
 the guy in the blog obviously doesn't care about audio specs, he just talks about practical stuff from the eyes of a smartphone/geeky toys user. can't say I see much lies in what he wrote here. it's obviously a non audiophile vision, but a vision still.
"Nowadays who needs a standalone device only for music?" well most of us on headfi do, but what's that to the billions of people listening to music with a cellphone or not listening at all outside of the house? let's not pretend that we're the human standard here.
who needs a big storage? that can be important for some as it can be not so important for others(I can perfectly function with a 16gb DAP for one, but I won't cry if I get more obviously ^_^).
the android version may have a good reason behind that choice, but you can't blame the guy for finding that ludicrous when even sony's very own phones will have a more up to date android.
again I'm not in a good place to talk about that, as I don't use a smartphone(not enough battery), my tablet is ON only in planes to watch movies, and I really wouldn't care what android version was on my DAP. but calm down you defense mechanism a little and admit that many people are not us and can find those stuff important and relevant.
a 1000$ phone that doesn't phone, doesn't have the latest android, and doesn't actually have more power output than a phone for your headphone. that's not an unreasonable way to look at the ZX2.
 
and until I see some measurements, the superiority of the sound is still a very subjective argument. and I don't even trust my own subjective opinion on sound quality. I do on music, not on sound quality.
