They must sell units in a niche area. Thus, they try to maximize their DAP related revenues. Using Android is surely cheaper than continuing developing their own DAP OS or getting too deep into some kind of Android mod. This does make sense to them. But, as others already said... if you are not satisfied with this situation, just don't buy these Sony DAPs .I find Sony to be ridiculous in their lack of interest or understanding of the need to optimize Android to unlock the full potential of a player that can run other Android music apps. Makes no sense whatsoever. They had the same issues with the ZX507 and learned nothing it seems.
