I'm DIYing a pair of headphones with 3D printed parts (cups very similar to R10, angled baffle) and I was wondering what the best driver would be to use to get closest to the drivers in the R10 (sound wise). Any suggestions?

I suggest you to get the CD3000 drivers.  However, I don't expect you to get the same results.  The magic of the R10 is more than just the angled baffle.  Your cups must also have the right stiffness as those 200-year old Zelkova wood used in manufacturing the R10.

I've read a few times that CD3000 drivers in the R10 housing are still pretty far from an R10, I was aiming for drivers that have the same general sound signature (mid centric with plenty of detail). However, you should know more that just about anyone on the best way to do this build, so maybe I'll try to hunt down some CD3k drivers. If not I was leaning towards something Audio Technica - AD900x, 1000x?

By the way @Purk, I got the approximate dimensions for the cups from your pictures I found on Google images when searching pictures of the housing, so thanks! My 3D modeled parts are a little different though as Solidworks was having some issues...

If CD3K drivers aren't satisfactory to you, and you can't get ahold of R10 drivers (you can't), then I think you're gonna have a bad time on this project.

hi, you shoukd search head fi for my thread "diy 3d printed headphones with hd800 driver". I think we have similar idea here. my design was inspired by the r10 but go for the inconventional driver hd800 for modding. the result is incredible detail, not much treble peak. however the bass is not that much. yoy can check the measurement a friend did for me. imo if you build a hp from thw ground up with a driver, go for the one with most detail. then you can always tune the sound to your liking with material, damping, pads and cable.

I’ve got the bass-light version #0457 for almost 2 years now, and recently have also got the bass-heavy #1182.  The bass-light are from 1989 production, the bass-heavy were made in 2004.  Both sound great!  I like the estats’ sound (have got the Orpheus set, the Omegas, etc.) but R10 are really great sounding headphones, from the same league as HE90 and SR-Omega.  The original ear pads of R10 were not comfortable enough for me (my head and ears are rather big).  I have tried few options and finally have chosen the “deluxe” ear pads from Audeze – soft, comfortable and adding just a bit more bass (which is good for both R10 – to my ears).  On the picture the bass-light have the non-leather suede ear pads and the bass-heavy have the leather ones.

Do the Audeze pads go right on? I am looking to replace my CD3000 pads with something a bit more time tested/worthy. Could the LCD earpads be a match or will they require some modification?
