The only thing that stops me from buying the EX1000 is the size. They are really huge and using them outdoor will cause a lot of attention I think...

Yeah that and its poor Isolation, but I bet these sound killer

Man, take the SM3's (used - 200 EUR). Powerful bass, ultra-realistic highs with a wonderful sparkle, lush and sweet mids and an impressive instrument separation. Great isolation, great comfort with the right tips, its a no-brainer. Check out the "For Sale/Trade Forums"

EX1000's are known for bad isolation/fit. I would consider that.

I have both ex1000 and sm3 v2 and the ex 1000 sounds better the soundstage is much bigger and they keep the best qualities of ba headphones, but for the outside the sm3 offers great sq, isolation and they don't look like you wear a 500$ headphones-

there is more air between instruments in the ex 1000 so you can hear every instrument in a larger space if that is instrument separation for you the ex 1000 wins. if it's like you can hear the instruments alone in the way that um3x don't know which wins have to check it later  both are great but if you are only interested in sq the ex 1000 are better in my opinion

Yes, I'm mostly interested in SQ, but instrument separation is very important to me. Thanks for the great info about separation. If you could check that with the UM3X, would be much appreciated :)

I have both the UM3X and EX1000. I can honestly say that the UM3X are the best compliment to the EX1000 that I have heard.

In comparison to the EX1000, the UM3X has a very "buttery" sound signature. I don't know how else to describe it; it is just very smooth and thick. The bass on the UM3X is positively delightful. It sort of scratches that bass quantity itch [for me]. The mids are also very good, but I prefer the EX1000's. The same can be said for the highs, the EX1000's are much more preferable.

I have been using the UM3X much more than the EX1000 lately because I am mostly on the go and need the additional isolation. I would recommend the UM3X only to someone who listens to mostly metal, hip hop, or dub step because I feel they slightly outperform the EX1000's in those two genres. Personally, I prefer the EX1000's overall due to the airiness they have, better highs, and better bass impact.
