Nice, been using my 1A lately as m KEF went down for the count. I like the 1A quite a bit.

How easy are they to drive? Also, how are the details in the music when listening to high quality files?

Very easy to drive. I have an E12, but frankly my Blackberry Z10 with modern recordings is loud enough. I find the level of detail to be very good. I actually only went with the KEF M500 as I knew in the summer for portable use with walking and bus transit the 1A were going to be hot. The 1A is quite nice so hopefully you enjoy it. Cheers.

Hey everyone I just wanted to report this HP to be really great, I liked them a lot. Smooth balance, great bass/impact, comfy treble, nice detail. Overall sq is fantastic, build quality is very nice also.

But today I returned them despite all their greatness. For me the deal breaker is the fact that they have poor noise isolation and the bass ports on top make a whistling sound if there is any wind. So on the go usage is nearly impossible. Sigh. And for home I prefer open-back design.

p.s oh, god, my hd 595s sound like crap now ((

Hi guys,

I plan on buying the Sony MDR-1A for gaming on PC.
Do I need an amp/dac to make them work?

If yes, would the magni/modi combo be enough?

Thanks a lot

You don't need to. However you might want to. Depends on how clean your audio output on your gaming PC is.

if you have issues like a lot of static etc I would recommend a good quality DAC/amp. The schiit combo is awesome and is very future proof of you want to change your headphones in the future.

Alternatives would be: audio engine D3, dragonfly, schiit fulla, Centrance dac port. Etc etc.

So don't buy anything now. See how nice it sounds and if you are happy don't buy anything else. Otherwise, see above

Cheers,
K

  So far...initial impression is impressive.

If you use a smart phone as your DAP trust me brother, pay the $8 for Neutron (audiophile player software) and with the built in parametric EQ make modest cuts at 125, 250, 500hz and the 1A gets much cleaner. Nice headphone.

I already purchased Neutron some years back...the only thing I use my cell for is streaming. I use the Pono as my DAP.

What are your EQ settings?
