That's my understanding, too. I don't think Sony would kill it this quickly. Could be that they're simply waiting for the existing stock to move before manufacturing new units. Having said that, I would note that MDR-Z1R has been on sale at around US$1k for over a year now here down under...
I hope Sony do release an IER-Z1Rm2 with improved mids. Maybe with another BA? Although with that said, I think the recessed/mids is a bit overstated. They aren't that bad to me
When people call it has a recessed mids, it is in references to some other things they compare it to. If you have no references then there is no points. My references is weird, but I modified the filters as soon as I had my IeR Z1R and heard the recessed Mids as soon as I had it. The point of references are all compared to my Hd800s and the soundstage presentations VS the detail retrieved. I also experimented with IER-M9 before I performed the modifications on IER-Z1R....in the end, I gave M9 away
Most importantly is though, your personal preferences and how you perceived the sound quality. If you enjoy it, then that is what counts the most
The history of the IER-Z1R was one of a delay. They ended up delayed about 90 days from their scheduled release date. I purchased one of the very first pairs #124 in the last week of February 2019.
I always listen to the sound with my ears and not with the graphs. And I don't hear any reccessed mids. I owned CA Solaris with the amazing mids, and I can’t say that Z1R are somehow behind Solaris in mids
Maybe recessed is the wrong word, but I find the mids do sound “thinner” when I a/b with the M9 & ex1000. But it’s minor and not really an issue, especially considering how much better the bass is with Z1R.
If compare M9 vs Z1R then yes, I agree that M9 (I have it too) has an even more intimate/close mids. But there the general nature of the sound is very close - "in the face". I did not hear a closer sound yet. But given that the Z1R's sound stage is much larger, the mids here is excellent too.
