Comparing the two I think the 1R is missing some sub bass and bass impact compared to the V6.

I went from AKG 701 to 1R and subbass in quantity is insane. Using audioengine d1.

The Cary Nighthawk is an excellent amp for modern mid-fi headphones.
An excellent amp for mid-fi headphones that costs $1200...

1R sounds amazing through the Z walkman. Almost have a 'surround sound feel' while watching movies.
Music sounds really warm & bass feels punchy. Great combo with dance/electronic music!

Not at all. I was simply commenting on a decidedly non-mid-fi amp being in the discussion. Gotta love Head-fi!

Heh. I have a $1900 DAC/amp I will be trying with the 1R. I don't see what the big deal is.

Who said anything was a big deal? I was just making an observation. See the smiley-face:

Personally, I am most interested in seeing how these fare without a dedicated amp because I wouldn't mind putting some money back in my bank account and simplifying my setup. Should have impressions next week. Getting a silver/brown model.

MDR 1R is not meant to be plugged into an amplifier and listen too.
I find the thought funny as from Sony's campaigning (with Katy, Method Man & Benga). They are considered artists of the dance scene and it is tuned with ample bass. Amplifying the bass (which is already set) will definitely be more enjoyable for bassheads.
A neutral sounding headphone will shine with an amp.
I dont consider 1R neutral, but something of the like of vmoda M80 but slightly less bass.

The 1R is a very loud phone out of the box, I use notch 8/15 from my Experia Tablet.
With my Walkman E7 setup, 15 is plenty darn loud.
