Sony budget earphone discussion thread (MH750, MH755, MH1C, EX300, etc)

Maybe not cheap at first but we all know it will be before long...
MH755 upgrade? STH50C

Earphone that enjoys high res high quality sound at reasonable price with Type-C direct connection
● We can enjoy high res using high quality driver and DAC

■ We reproduce colorful music by driver unit of small size of 9.7mm although high sensitivity

■ High sound quality D / A converter (equivalent to SBH90C) corresponding to high resolution reproduction of 192kHz / 24bit

■ Beat response control to enable sharp bass reproduction

■ We play delicate sound with little spread of sound, firm bass, noise with independent ground cable

■ We realize high wearing characteristics and high sound quality with hybrid earpiece

■ We cope with reproduction stop of music and start of voice assistant by remote control button operation

Of course not quite the same as they went to C connection with a DAC

@¥7000 it already seems a $60 IEM. Can't see it being @ MH755 price for a really long time. Unless, some Chinese wholesaler decides to sell them for peanuts

What’s the 2 things in the back of the shell in that X-ray style marketing image? It looks like a big screw and a crossover board? But I doubt that’s what it really is.

It can’t be the DAC chip, as those are usually integrated into the type C plug body.

Nothing said about it on the Sony site except about "beat response control" and " optimizing the movement of the diaphragm, the low-pass transient characteristics are improved and the rhythm is accurately reproduced" but just in tandem with the picture and talking about the vent. Could be directing air flow.

Hmm, that Sony description sounds like marketing gibberish for “a vent”:

This six kH intercept system looks like a similar thing in the back of the Sony...

It's possible to get a steeper rise toward the bass if you read on near the end of that post. Excessively scooped mids is a super common issue with IEMs, even more so than excessive bass. EQ is a good option to solve these issue besides physical mods. It's worse when a IEM has issues in the treble range, EQ cant really deal with that. Adding damping materials only works if you're really lucky, you either sacrifice fit or the material ends up affecting a too large range of frequencies. Sony MH755's combination of sound quality and convenience makes it unique in any price range. Smooth and detailed enough in the treble range, takes EQ very well and has a convenient cable length for wireless shirt clip receivers that last all day on a charge. I dont even bother looking for boutique alternatives at this point.

I finally managed to continue what I said I would do at the bottom of that post you’re talking about. I wrote a follow-up here: link (scroll down a little)

I just started playing with the idea again, but so far the results sound promising (to me at least):

I’m really more interested in the technique in general. The experiments in this case just happened to be done on a Sony MH755. But the mods should work for many kinds of IEMs. Manufacturers have long been building this into their designs.

“Beat response control to enable sharp bass reproduction”

Hmmm, I wonder what that is? Lol.

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding where the foam in the MH755 is located and how to remove it. Does anyone have any pictures by chance?

Edit: nvm, found it, didn't expect it to be so small. I'm liking the sound a lot more without the foam

Crin measured multiple samples of the MH755, and the QC just really amazes me for a $5 iem.

https://crinacle.com/graphs/sony-mh755/

So is there a difference between the black MH755s and the white ones?
I think there are a lot of fakes out there, so that may explain why some others get different graphs. But probably the genuine ones have good QC and are consistent.

Yes, I posted measurement differences here. https://www.head-fi.org/threads/son...5-mh1c-ex300-etc.900005/page-24#post-15057580

I think the black ones are like the MH750 with a quicker treble roll-off, and more bass. So, warmer sounding.

Fakes are really obvious. They look horrible, and it's got to sound obviously horrible.

Just curious, which seller did you get the genuine black one from?

Yeah +1 to this. I read that most of the black ones are fakes. A legit seller for these will be good to know.

Looks like there's burnt on MH755 where the cable goes in. I'd take it you used solder tip to make the hole bigger? And doesn't look sealed off to me either. Is it fine though?

Think I'll go with recable mod just like @Slater suggested but just a bit consensus in my mind.
Which one these you reckon will fit the original strain relief? Just worried about the seal and how to deal if it doesn't fit the strain relief.
Don't really bother about the strain relief itself.

Prefer the 1st one. Prettiest(and priciest) than the rest.
2nd and 3rd are just mic vs non-mic(same cable to my eyes).
Last one looks the slimmest of them all(again, maybe just my eyes).

Limit myself to these because of price range. Spending more appears to be preposterous for MH755(that's just me). Cheers.

Hi, Panda is my husband and is at work right now. The reason that the hole is larger in that pair and the strain relief is not there is because this one was a failed MMCX mod. The jacks just would not stay in and were not good quality so he put the cable on and is happy with the sound.

On on the ones he has recabled since, 4 for me and a couple for friends, the strain reliefs have been kept. It is best to keep them.

The first cable in your list should fit if you are very very patient. The others will fit for sure. I have a white no mic one similar to the second and third link. We have two of the red cables that we plan to use on the two spare 755s that we still have. The cable in that last link will also work... very thin... but not that pretty to me. We have used that one on a couple of earbuds.

There are the 4 he did for me. The ones we gifted were another purple one and one with that red/gold cable. I love the feel of that red/gold one.

At first my pink one had this cable... so you can see that the twist ones can fit. We ended up having a problem with that cable... it might be wired wrong. So far we have not tried to use it again.

Them rosegold(I'll just call them that) are just stunning! Was it from Ali as well?

Yes it is but we had a 10 pack (he makes a lot of earbuds). Maybe you can find a pack of one or two. I have noticed we have a lot more choice buying in bulk. The purple one was from a pack of five. The others were available individually. Always looking for more....

Here is a closer picture of the other one that we did with that cable. Put the Sony tag on that one. I kind of wish we had done it with the others.

I think this might be it on ali... for just one cable. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32921527448.html
