I'm curious as to what makes you happier with foobar2000 than winamp. I myself am an avid foobar user, but I have also used winamp and, utilizing the same output devices (eg. KS, ASIO), there should theoretically be no difference in the audio output quality. My actual experience would tend to support this.

actually usability wise i prefer winamp -- but the way i have fb2k setup right now it sounds way better...

I'm gonna try and locate those KS and ASIO plugins for winamp -- thx for the heads up

The ASIO plugin for winamp doesn't work for me -- pops and crackles are heard and on another mode the sound just stutters.

also tried the Kernal Streaming plugin -- it slows down winamp and makes it sluggish and unstable

I'm using the ASIO plugin from the winamp page though -- maybe there's a better one?

I installed ASIO4All and it fixed the crackling and popping -- man this sounds GOOD now ... i might just stick with winamp

edit: ugn it just cause my system to reboot and it keeps stuttering once in awhile -- every time i minimize winamp it stutters.

I prefer Winamp v5.53 because of mainly how the whole interface of the program is set up. The visuals are attractive, it's mostly free, nice/organized song read outs, having an integrated web browser, customizable song icons, easily creates play lists, (drag and drop) supports a wide variety of codecs, enables hot keys, endless amounts of plug ins, etc... It does a good job in recongnizing tags and album art as well, along w/ having decent - good SQ in playback.

So, regarding a player (as a whole) I have yet to find anything better

i want to use winamp but after using it for awhile it's too unstable on my system -- it keeps causing freeze ups and i have to end task it.

It won't modify them in any way as far as i know -- it just allows the ASIO option to be selected in various programs.

I use foobar. It has a somewhat steep learning curve if you want to customize it. I sat with the program a couple of evenings, and now I am happy that I did.

Reasons for me converting to foobar
Open source
Small footprint
Customizable
Fast
Free
Asio out (winamp has plug-in too)
Tagging
Tree browsing of albums (folders)
Nice converter cd -> flac
...

With all settings relating to audio output (ie. ASIO, KS, DS) the same in both players? I find it really hard to believe that. And I'm a fb2k user myself.
