Dolby Atmos from Apple Music Macbook app shows up to the A16 incorrectly as 2 channel PCM. At least it up mixes to Aura 3D.

Very confusing. Lol.

There are some inexpensive Roon endpoints available like the FiiO SR11 and from WiiM. Maybe try one of those? Some of them have digital outputs that you could connect to the A-16. Personally, I don't find upmixed two channel very satisfying and prefer to just keep it two channels most of the time.

Apple TV fixed it’s wireless audio sync for atmos . So airpods pro or max now a viable HT solution with a big tv , no longer iPad or iPhone .

I occasionally use my Airpod Pro 2 with my Apple TV. The virtualization is not as good as the A-16 of course, but still very enjoyable and fully wireless. Handy when you need to get up frequently, like watching something in the living room while you have a pot on the stove in the kitchen.

You may have other alternatives. My A16 is still packed away after a house move, and I am using my laptop system - with Roon (or any source) running into the APL Virtuoso standalone package (about $120 from APL - the acoustics lab at the University of Huddersfield), driving my closed headphones. It isn't as realistic as an A16, so not a full Smyth replacement, but is amazing for the price and provides "out of the head" virtualisation of numerous different speakers (I am listening to Genelec right now). You need a reasonably fast laptop for the processing - I am using a recent Macbook Air, and it occasionally crashes. But the lead designer (Professor Hyunkook Lee) is really engaged with users and actually responds to emails suggesting new features. Give it a try. I haven't jumped into the virtuoso , Also the pc has limited scope as a media player in my current system. I do have the Dolby Atmos head tracking capable Maxwell though. Is there a step by step guide on how to set up virtuoso with Mpc-hc as a video player? ( I'm on win 11).

Today, I sampled the hustle and bustle of the 2025 High End in Munich. At the 2017 edition, I went there to attend the demostration with Realiser A16 carried out by Smyth Research. This post is not a report in detail about the overhelming audio devices promoted by various exhibitors.

I would like to write about the explanatory conversation I had with Stefan Bock, the founder of Pureaudio BD format, on pureaudio streaming service (pureaudiostreaming.com). He was in favour of using NVIDIA Shield TV Pro over HDMI to Realiser A16. I asked him if a computer with HDMI outlet might be also used. He was quite reluctant because a PC might not be reliable to convey high resolution audio signals to Realiser A16.

At 2025 High End, pureaudiostreaming was present in conjuction with Kii Audio and Nuprime Audio.
