Schiit Magni goes well with SHR940 for my preferences, some might find it a little bright but good refinement and detail retrieval. I tried with O2 didn't like it near as much. You will want a decent DAC though eventually, something like Stoner Acoustics UD110v2 would be a decent choice. Myself I use Aune T1 with golden lion tube then feed Magni from it's RCA line out You could even opt for the Aune T1 alone which is a $180 dac/amp, sometimes cheaper.
My friend and I tried the Bravo ocean tube amp, while i liked it for my open HD558, he said that the tube amp didn't go well with the closed back SRH940. What the amp appears to do is add richness and organicness to the sound, also making the bass a little heavier. Benefiting open cans more than closed ones.
If I were to make a guess I would say SS amp's will do better due to the light, clean and detail nature of the headphone's sound.
Shure 940 work pretty well with almost every amp I heard, at the moment I'm listening from the M-Track output playing a bass guitar.. still lovely sound.
Don't run the 940 with the magni. It's too bright. I prefer my 940 with the FiiO e17. I have the 940 with the e17. I loved it. Couldn't stand it on high volume when I got the magni and modi. I liked it better on my e17.

I guess that's why we're all human beings, with different preferences......
hello fellow shure 940 owners... thank you for your reply and support. so i put an order for shure 940 yesterday, and it'll arrive in a week.
my old headphone was a grado sr60.
i've had a problem with my laptop and i'd like to hear your opinions about it...
Initially i thought i wouldn't need dac/amp (as im fairly very very satisfied with shure 940 performance even without dac/amp when i auditioned it with my ipod / cellphone). the problem comes at home. i listen mainly with my laptop and sometimes with my PC.
my laptop is pretty confusing to describe, please bear with me. When the audio jack is being plugged in, the dell inspiron screen will have a pop-up menu with sounds modes that i have to choose, so that the sound will be redirected from the internal speaker to the headphone. (the sound modes are
Line in / headphone / speaker out / skullcandy headphone / dell speaker out / skullcandy headset / mic in).
when i choose headphone / skullcandy headphone modes, the sound is atrocious. it gave me echo / robotic noises / very unnatural sound. i can't describe it other than vocals sounded like robocop.
the speaker mode is more acceptable though. it just gave me hisses and some rare times when the laptop is hot, buzzes (which is solved by rebooting).
so after a lot of readings, you see the reason i want a DAC isn't for performance per se but because i'm hoping that with DAC my songs doesn't sound like female robocops singing with packs of bees in the background. However, i've never own a DAC before. can DAC fixes that problem?
my question is... am i correct in my search? will buying DAC solves my robocop voice problem...?
my pc is okay though, the motherboard has that gimmick sound advert thingy, it doesn't even buzz.

oh yeah i'm tight on budget so i only have ~$150 to spend.
pps:: Actually... i've had fiio e07k before, maybe in 2011 or 2012, an impulse buy. i barely even know what DAC means at the time, i just got upsell by some seller.
that time... when i tried it with my old laptop it didn't change the sound at all with my grado sr60. with / without dac it sounded exactly the same. that was my first dac/amp purchase and i was very disappointed with fiio. However, i didn't use bass / gain settings back then, i just left everything on default. so maybe my own dumbness at that time contributed to the factor as well.
i only have 2 options right now for ~$150 dac/amp market locally. either fiio e17 ($170) / nuforce udac3 ($120) / buying schiit magni + rca cable from schiit ($170). tbh, if i have to spend $170 i'd rather not spend it on a fiio. but it's a DAC. i'm a little worried that buying schiit magni will amplified the robotic female noise instead.
so.. based on the heart to heart story i just pour,,, what do you guys think i should get...?
cheers
