Don't run the 940 with the magni. It's too bright. I prefer my 940 with the FiiO e17. I have the 940 with the e17. I loved it. Couldn't stand it on high volume when I got the magni and modi. I liked it better on my e17.

Maybe this will help you... Looking for something to replace my 940 since it's worn out already. Want a closed set to replace it since I now have the he500 which I open and leaks like crazy and has zero isolation. My budget is 300 or so.. Must be good with my e17 or decent straight from my Galaxy s4 or iPod.. Narrowed it down to the Nad viso hp50 and the Focal spirit professional. I actually wouldn't mind rebuyung the 940s again but the build quality could be better.

Schiit Magni goes well with SHR940 for my preferences, some might find it a little bright but good refinement and detail retrieval. I tried with O2 didn't like it near as much. You will want a decent DAC though eventually, something like Stoner Acoustics UD110v2 would be a decent choice. Myself I use Aune T1 with golden lion tube then feed Magni from it's RCA line out  You could even opt for the Aune T1 alone which is a $180 dac/amp, sometimes cheaper.

My friend and I tried the Bravo ocean tube amp, while i liked it for my open HD558, he said that the tube amp didn't go well with the closed back SRH940. What the amp appears to do is add richness and organicness to the sound, also making the bass a little heavier. Benefiting open cans more than closed ones.

If I were to make a guess I would say SS amp's will do better due to the light, clean and detail nature of the headphone's sound.

Shure 940 work pretty well with almost every amp I heard, at the moment I'm listening from the M-Track output playing a bass guitar.. still lovely sound.

hello fellow shure 940 owners... thank you for your reply and support. so i put an order for shure 940 yesterday, and it'll arrive in a week.
my old headphone was a grado sr60.

i've had a problem with my laptop and i'd like to hear your opinions about it...

Initially i thought i wouldn't need dac/amp (as im fairly very very satisfied with shure 940 performance even without dac/amp when i auditioned it with my ipod / cellphone). the problem comes at home. i listen mainly with my laptop and sometimes with my PC.

my laptop is pretty confusing to describe, please bear with me. When the audio jack is being plugged in, the dell inspiron screen will have a pop-up menu with sounds modes that i have to choose, so that the sound will be redirected from the internal speaker to the headphone. (the sound modes are Line in / headphone / speaker out / skullcandy headphone / dell speaker out / skullcandy headset / mic in).

when i choose headphone / skullcandy headphone modes, the sound is atrocious. it gave me echo / robotic noises / very unnatural sound. i can't describe it other than vocals sounded like robocop.

the speaker mode is more acceptable though. it just gave me hisses and some rare times when the laptop is hot, buzzes (which is solved by rebooting).

so after a lot of readings, you see the reason i want a DAC isn't for performance per se but because i'm hoping that with DAC my songs doesn't sound like female robocops singing with packs of bees in the background. However, i've never own a DAC before. can DAC fixes that problem?

my question is... am i correct in my search? will buying DAC solves my robocop voice problem...?

my pc is okay though, the motherboard has that gimmick sound advert thingy, it doesn't even buzz.
===
oh yeah i'm tight on budget so i only have ~$150 to spend.

pps:: Actually... i've had fiio e07k before, maybe in 2011 or 2012, an impulse buy. i barely even know what DAC means at the time, i just got upsell by some seller.
that time... when i tried it with my old laptop it didn't change the sound at all with my grado sr60. with / without dac it sounded exactly the same. that was my first dac/amp purchase and i was very disappointed with fiio. However, i didn't use bass / gain settings back then, i just left everything on default. so maybe my own dumbness at that time contributed to the factor as well.

i only have 2 options right now for ~$150 dac/amp market locally. either fiio e17 ($170) / nuforce udac3 ($120) / buying schiit magni + rca cable from schiit ($170). tbh, if i have to spend $170 i'd rather not spend it on a fiio. but it's a DAC. i'm a little worried that buying schiit magni will amplified the robotic female noise instead.

so.. based on the heart to heart story i just pour,,, what do you guys think i should get...?

cheers

So strange that you can't heard the difference, I found a drastic improvement everytime I plug an external DAC to a laptop

If you don't like how it sound, to plug a Magni without a Dac could be a waste of money, Dac/amp is the way. Bring your laptop/940 to the local store and test how it sound if you doubt, you can't be disappointed in my opinion.

i have a feeling that the fiio e07k is faulty.  where i live the headphone store doesn't really do audition (like at all)... so...yeah there's that.

in my very limited understanding about how dac and amp works. if my laptop with headphone mode sounds robotic, then an amp just amplify the power isn't it?

if say i buy the magni, it's going to amplify the robotic echo reverb noise even stronger? is that how it works... or will just DAC works with my entry-level dell laptop?

my pc sounds totally fine though. barely noticeable hiss.

I think you'll get an improvement, it don't mind if you play the music from an entry level pc or a monster pc, the DAC will erase the difference becouse it directly convert the file from digital to analog bypassing your pc. So, the only important thing will be the DAC/amp quality :)

Ps. Sorry, with my poor english I'm the wrongest person for explain something like this :) I hope someone better than me will help you.. soon or later  LOL

if i buy only schiit magni, without dac... that means the sound conversion will still be done in my laptop is it...?
so.. instead of getting better sound, will i get more robotic / echo / reverb sound instead...?

haha~

Sure.. this is the point

Unless you add (between pc and amp) a dedicated DAC like Schiit Modi or others

how about the modi and the vali? havnt tried the vali with the 940s.

but really... the modi and magni + the 940s get too bright.. a lot! at least for me. if you are really stuck with a $150 budget theres always the e17. really nothing wrong about that.

i actually had the 940 first before any amp. then i went up from the e11... to the e17... to the modi and magni. but then i also got the he500 when i got the modi and magni. been using the e11 + 940 for 2 years. then the e17 + e17 for 1 year.

hows fiio e17 sound? does it makes it darker or warmer or brighter...?

========
ive got a very basic question to ask, and idk where to ask so i post it here....

when i use PC for listening to music, if i plug it in direct, is there a difference between plugging in the headphone to the front case jack and to the motherboard jack on the back directly...?

which one is the more recommended method...?

cheers...

I hadn't used my SHR940 for a couple of weeks, they'd been stored inside a velvet drawstring pouch. When I pulled them out plugging them in this evening this awful noise resembling that found on a dusty volume pot came through the right side every time I moved. I tracked the problem down to the connection going into the headphone. I tried blowing on it with some air trying to clear any dust build up though the problem persisted. Only after I dipped the connection in some alcohol (methylated spirits) and inserted in/out a few times did the problem go away...

Considering the connection is never unplugged from the headphone and inside a drawstring pouch lined with dust free material, how on earth did this occur......
