What's the opposite of eye candy?


For those of you who want to see how the headband of the SRH940 works-ish...

...I guess I'll need to send this under the warranty eventually. It's still functional on headband settings 0 and 1, but still. :/

Has anyone experienced any distortion or L/R channel imbalance with their SRH940s?

My 6 month old 940 recently sounds like the left is softer than the right on some tracks.  Its really annoying, (and nope its not due to mastering).  I'm thinking of RMAing

Not sure if we should laugh or cry. Shure deserve some bad publicity, so that they learn a lesson. It's not a planned obsolescence, it's a plain ripp-off.
I suggest you update your review on head gear section, with some of the photos.

Perhaps  you are not putting the cups symmetrically in your head.
Anyways, my brain is not that good in noticing left/right difference in sound signature, it's even hard for me to notice sometimes a volume imbalance.

Definitely putting them symetrically.  Got a friend to test it out - seems that he hears it too

It's the opposite for me. My left earcup/channel has always been a tad bit louder than the right earcup/channel. The frequency response curve on Innerfidelity seems to match my observations.
 
Oddly enough, my HD238 also has a slight channel imbalance. The left earcup/channel is quieter than the right earcup/channel. Innerfidelity's frequency response curve also suggests that imbalance.
 
Maybe my ears are just sensitive to the imbalances?
 
 
Anyway, you can try using these benchmarking tests to confirm your observations.
Also, try wiggling the cable in the SRH940's earcup. I have found that the sound sometimes gets cut-off on the right earcup when the cable isn't at the correct angle/position for some reason (another gripe I have of the SRH940 since I'm not sure if it's the cable being worn out, or the headphone's connection being bad).

Yeah I'll have to update that. My headband started to crack about 1/2 a year after purchase, then it fractured nearly all the way at a local Head-Fi meet in the summer, and now it's fully broken. The swivel hinge mechanism's cover is also cracking and is evident when stretching the headband to put on one's head (many have noticed this cracking issue too). It's not broken, yet, nor does it seem to be a major issue, but I had higher expectations for Shure's build quality. People were always talking about how tank-like the SRH840 was built, so I figured the SRH940 would continue to have such a build. Apparently I was wrong. >.>

I have never heard SRH940 but read a lot on the net.
Can any one tell me the different vs k550 or k701 vs. Shure SRH940?

it kind of requires a certain taste to love this headphone due to its high amount of spikeyness and lack of bass. its delightfully crisp and detailed though on the other hand

I'm using Magnepan speakers on my hifi-system, so I'm use to clean sound, and not much bass. I like magnepan because of the clean sound, details in everything. The k701 is a little to flat I think, and the beats by monster is just bass (studio). I hope the SRH940 is the right for me, and it's not to expensive as the K701 is.

this exactly what happened to my AKG 495NC, it has the same structure except it was an on ear headphone, I think the hinge structure puts too much stress on the headband

I compared it briefly except the K701, from what i remebered the K550 is cleaner sounding, K550 has a blacker background, K550 has a bigger headstage than 940. The 940 is smoother and more enjoyable for music listening to my ears

Finally got around to taking out the foam plug. I can't tell a difference, so back in it goes. Did the same thing back then with the SRH440 and it didn't change.
