Shure SE846 Impressions Thread

OK, so I wonder what else there is in the over/on ear headphone market that gets close to the SE846, I've done a quick search and I couldn't find any suggestions for a headphone that has a comparable sound signature.

Ok, I'll chime in here and say that the Ultrasone Pro 750 has a similar signature, though with brighter highs. It has very deep and impactful bass. I imagine most of the Ultrasone's do. I've owned the Proline 750 which the Pro 750 was based upon for over ten years and love them enormously. Reading about them you will find they polarize people - there are some detractors who just sound foolish to me, like they decided to join a sports club and are going to be loyal to their teammates to the bitter end. But I'd pay attention to the folks who love 'em - love is harder to obtain! :)

The Denon D7200's I had sounded really similar to the SE846's to my ears. They both had big bass, the mids I thought were a little better on the SE846's and the treble with the blue filters on the SE846's had that same presentation to me.

Mrspeakers AEON would be worth considering :)

The open version, I assume? The closed version, IMO, don't sound very close to the 846.

E-MU Teak. However, those have a bit more high-end presence, less mids quality, and more oomph in the bass. Still very close though.

Blind A/B test, no one would be able to tell them apart.

Does the clear color turn yellow over time?
not sure in tropical weather like Singapore where you live. I am in the US and don't see the clear plastic changing color at all. This is my 2nd SE846.

What gets me about these is the dependence on source hardware. I also have the SE535 and a lot of times these sound better, as the 36ohm output impedance makes them sound good with anything. It's just strange with the SE846. I mean, most people aren't going to know. I don't mind this limitation, but these are meant for the general public who are going to be using these incorrectly 90% of the time. :D

And what's with this huge gap with output impedance between the 535 and 846? The SE535 is 36 ohms for God's sake. That's on one extreme, and then the SE846 is the other extreme? So odd. Now maybe there's some freq. dependency thing i'm missing, and the difference isn't so extreme. Don't know.

I agree some people most likly don't like the way the SE846 sound because of this, then there is the hiss thing because of the high sensitivity.

There must be some kind of design trade-off impedance vs something when designing multi-balanced armature IEM design, no idea what though.

I'm sure Shure :) know more about designing an IEM than I do though.

Does the clear color turn yellow over time?

My clear set is over two years old, and the plastic hasn't yellowed or clouded in the slightest. I wear them outside fairly frequency so they have been exposed to UV, which I imagine is the source of the concern here. So far, so good.

I am new and confused....! Having tried the Shure SE535, I did not enjoy them and preferred the se215. To me the 535 were too sharp in the treble and fatigued my ears. Using A&k 70 with flac files. I have the Shure srh1540 over ears that I really like. Anyway the question is are the SE 845 or the Westone w60 a good iem step up? Or any similar priced suggestions welcome. Thanks.

i went from the SE535 to get more bass and also found that the SE535 was very fatiguing and found that SE846 really lacked in treble/sparkle.

i've since went to campfire andromedas and LOVE them.
