Gen 2 is the same as gen 1, just one more filter included and different colors available. I think there are many better options for less money available.
I have 7hz timeless and they have greater clarity to me (so do my APP2s!), but somehow my ears tune to the 846s after a few seconds and I just enjoy music more. It’s probably the better bass, but somehow I just can’t stop listening with them, and I stop trying to analyze the sound quality.
The timeless’s are great though. $160 vs $700+ lol
The midrange area thickness and tone weight of se846 is not easily matched by any IEM (or headphone for that matter). Timeless is u-shaped planar with great separation and broader sense of space. Completely different animals. Se846 vocals sense of intimacy is unparalleled, great bass but underwhelming treble by design (stage monitors).
The IE 900 were a nice upgrade IMO. Better resolution, but not as forward mids (it's difficult to find mids like the 846 have, which is a big reason why I still have mine). However, next natural step up is the Shure KSE, if you don't mind the energizer, that is.
There are honestly many "better" IEMs out there with a similar tuning.
I would recommend to start with something like the Tripowin x HBB Olina SE, which I find to be very pleasently tuned, and they are not that expensive. And then search for similar tunings in higher price categories if you like them.
If you are happy with the fit and sound of the se846 then I would suggest you replace it with, wait for it, the se846 Gen 2.
There is a reason Shure didn't really change much with the Gen 2, that is, its pretty much perfect already, yes it isn't the latest design with bone conduction this, planar that and electrostatic thingy's but it still sounds very good when paired with the right source IMHO.
If you buy another se846 enjoy it for the next 8 years and then come back here when you lose it again and I will say get the se846 gen 3.

I totally agree, what I like about the se846 I haven't found anywhere yet (not even the very expensive one's, and yes I tried even between 2000 and 3500 euro one's)

I agree, tbh I stopped looking for another IEMs when I got my SE846 (Gen 1). The sound is already perfect to me, the bass (damn I love this with the SE846) and mids, even the treble are already great in my ears. I think its my end game IEM for now.
Fiio cable, soft, benefit also to change from balanced to unbalanced (3 in one, 2.5 3.5 and 4.4) price around € 70,00, the pro version is thicker and less comfortable
Ever since I switched to the Linum Superbax years ago, have never felt the need to switch off it. Very small/light cable that supports the 846's low impedance.
