What other source equipment are you using again to a and b the 4r and the 535??

I actually ended up liking the SE-535 more. Well, I think so. I've been using them a lot more. It's just really hard for me to go back to the 4R, because it sounds to me like the 4R has a veil over it. Like a thick layer. I know that's not the case. Having had the 4R first, they are very neutral and wonderful IEMs. But my ears can't adjust going back and forth from the 535 and 4R. And maybe it's just preference, but I'm finding a lot to love about the 535s.

How are the SE-846 in comparison to the SE-535? I'm going to wait until January 2014 to get them. But I was wondering if there is a big jump in sound signature from the SE-535. Or if they are more of the same, just with some improvements?

From what I hear, they are much more bassy. Same mids, but with much better bass. I've heard some complaints about treble extension though.

I've had the 846 for nearly two weeks. The 846 has more bass than the 535. The mid-vocals region is more forward on the 535 than the 846 (with balanced filter). I haven't tried other filters yet. The treble of the 846 is better now than 100 hours ago.

Wow!  Are those even longer from end to end than the 535 like the picture makes them look?  I couldn't even fit them in my ears!!!  The back of the curve on the 535 hurt my ears from pressure...

I don't think they are longer. Maybe the nozzle is a bit longer than SE535's, but not the housing.

Anyone who has both se530/535 and jh13 like their se53x better than their jh13.
I find jh13 too dry compared to se53x.

I guess it's personal preference and what sort of music is played most of the time.  I prefer detail, clarity and extension top to bottom, and the SE535 just lacks in those areas.  Other universals do better for that too.  Also the sibilance in treble was not really great for long listening.
 
Personally I find nearly everything about the JH13 is better for my everyday usage.  No regrets in selling the SE535..  Some people may say the JH is too analytical or dry, but imo not really.  I'd rather say, it's just that the Shures are too mid forward, too mid focused compared to many others.

I wouldn't mind more bass, so the 846 sounds like a worthy upgrade. I just don't like when the bass is bloated/flabby. So as long as it's still tight like the 535 but with more impact, I'll be happy.

Are you having a good fit in your ear, because that has a big impact on the bass?

I admit for certain genre, the SE535 is better than my JH13, because they're an expert or master of mids.. if you prefer that signature then yes perhaps the 846 is worth a try (I haven't heard them so cannot comment).  You may also benefit from certain amps with bass boost (like my Arrow) or with EQ apps.  The amount of bass was just right for me when I used bass boost 1 on the Arrow with SE535.  Still tight and not bloated, just right (boost 2 was too much and bloated).
 
Just FYI with JH13 I don't need bass boost.

How would you describe the treble of the SE846 in terms of clarity, details and extension, now that you've put more hours into it?
 
As some consider the SE535 lacking in these areas, I was hoping the SE846 might have improved a bit here. I listen to a lot of classical music, specifically piano and string ensembles. My ears are very sensitive to sibilance and treble peaks, so I'm looking for a non-fatiguing treble response while still retaining as much clarity, details and extension as possible.
