Shure AONIC 50 -

Hi, fellow Shure Aonic 50 users. Could anyone be so kind as to comment if they notice a significant music distortion when ANC is set to MAX (only happens in this mode) and the user is in sudden motion (e.g. walking too fast or sitting in a bus)?
I receive contradictory replies from Shure about this issue.
Thank you

There is a slight hiss in max mode, but it's not noticeable in situations you need it. Didn't experience any of the other "problems".

I know what you’re referring to and I believe there are two likely causes of it—the first is when the earcups‘ seal is momentarily broken (eg. walking too fast), and the second is when there’s a loud environmental noise/sudden change in pressure near you that the ANC system overreacts to (eg. sitting in a bus).

The Aonic 50 is a super comfortable headphone with a relatively low amount of clamping force, which in my experience makes it more susceptible to the broken seal effect compared to other ANC headphones. I’ve noticed this effect a few times when walking around my apartment with ANC on high. Taking a moment to carefully re-adjust the fit (usually by angling the earcups toward the back of my head a little bit) helps. It also seems like earcups become more resistant to this after a few minutes of wear (perhaps because they’re warming up). Anyway, you could try adjusting the fit to see if that helps minimize ANC noise when walking.

I don’t know of anything that can mitigate the second cause aside from better ANC. FWIW even the Sony XM3 exhibits this problem, which I noticed almost daily when riding the shuttle to and from work (back in the Before Times™️). When the shuttle doors opened, it’d produce a low-frequency ‘whoosh’ -like distortion. Once the shuttle was in motion, especially if any windows were open or if there were any bumps or potholes on the ground, it would periodically do it again. If it annoyed me enough, I’d just turn ANC off. At least the Aonic 50 isolates better than the very hollow, very plastic XM3 does.

Thank you, Kalli and Ryanmatic. Just want to comment on Ryan's reply. The first possible reason that you raised was my initial suspicion as well. I actually used both of my hands to push againts the earcups in an attempt to create bettter seal with additional clamping force - the distortion remained. I would say the second reason is more likely - I received two replies from Shure (a direct email from Shure support team and an answer of my AMAZON question), which pointed out to this. Their replies contradicted each other though. One said it's a unit fault and I should ask for a replacement/service, while the other said it's normal due to the "agressive" tuning of their ANC system.

i had the first generation of the Sony 1000 (can't make me remember their dull naming in full), and it wed this Problem to the extreme: every time the doors on the Subway closed the drivers did a full excursion swing against my ear drums. Same while walking when I did a harder step. I disliked their sound anyway, so that sealed their fate for me. Point is, aggressive ANC can overreact... I don't use it on the Aonic at all, but given this Ikd only ever consider the medium setting I guess... if I ever use trains or planes again that is

Hey, I guess the "replacement" answer was from Amazon and the "it's normal" answer from Shure?
To be honest, Amazon support is done by trained monkeys, while my experience with Shure support here in germany was awesome.

The "replacement" answer was actually given by the Shure support team (I emailed them directly to support@shure.com).
The reply in AMAZON, on the other hand can be seen in the attached screenshot

Ah ok, so basically both answers are from Shure directly. But one was given on the Amazon site. I was referring to Amazon's chat support.

In that case I would reference to the Amazon answer and ask the support mail guy what's the case here. Maybe there is a misunderstanding.

Yeah, I have sent the same screenshot to the Shure support team. I update you guys with anything from them :)
Thanks for sharing their original reply—the one you received via Amazon is quite insightful. Given how ubiquitous this experience can be across ANC headphones, I’d be surprised if the set you have needs to be replaced, but am interested to hear what you learn regardless

Hi guys,

I just got my A50 4 days ago and it sound great.

I would like to know whether can I change to balance cable to use with my player for analog use?

Thanks.

Matt Loh

No. The SA50 only supports single ended use. The fact that the cable has a 2.5mm TRRS plug on the headphone end is for cable detection purposes, and not for balanced audio reproduction.. Shure officially confirmed this.
