Shure AONIC 50 -

Firmware 0.4.9 is available together with an app update (on iOS at least). Unfortunately no release notes... installation seems to go without problems.

Thank you for this information. The downloading in my iPhone is very quickly, 5 minutes and 1 minute extra for installing the update in the sa50 and rebooting. But first I needing deleting the app and installing again because when I go to firmware update before is saying always no update is necessary.

Edit: I seeing now isn't necessary deleting and installing the shure app in iOS, but only necessary updating with the last version (2.1.2.275) before the updating of firmware.

I finally got to to do a test on the mic. I have used it on phone calls before. I asked the other person on the line how I sound. They said fine, but there is no A/B comparison.

So I recorded voice messages using iPhone's Voice Memos app. I compared this to Apple AirPods Pro and AirPods.
  • Shure A50 applies higher gain, so voice is louder. However, it amplifies the noise floor. And it also pick up a lot of background noise (like computer noise and floor fan)
  • Apple AirPods Pro volume is lower than A50. But not significantly, so I can still hear my voice fine. And it does not have any noise in background.
  • Apple AirPods volume is much lower. It's so low that I have to turn up the volume to hear the recording well. It also doesn't have any noise in background.
The differences are quite significant. If I have to choose, I'd prefer AirPods Pro mic and recordings. Because the background is just clean. A50 has way too much noise.

Since last time I pretty much decided on the DALI IO, the AONICs were released, my question would be: Is there anything new on the horizon? xd

And what kind of sound quality would those ones deliver?

There‘s always something new just around the corner... which doesn’t make it better than existing options, just maybe shinier. I tend to go by established models, just ordered an ATH-M50xBT...

regarding the Audeze models: their soundneignatures are all over the place, with the old LCD line having more common traits than their other offerings. So I guess you‘ll have to wait for impressions...

thanks man.

Didn't like the M50x for fun/casual listening. It was kinda too "analytic" for me. Other than that i would love to see more manufacturers just take their wired "best sellers" and add redesign them for wireless use. Audio Technica did a great job in that regard.

As far as reviews go the BT version might be a tad warmer than the regular M50x, so there’s hope I guess ;-)

I also broke down regarding the Shure SRH1540, which I‘d prefer to have a wireless variant as well. Yes, overall I think taking an existing design and adding Bluetooth is not a bad idea. But of course there are many challenges, and Audio Technica has to be commended for doing it without external changes, plus making it a better product overall at a very reasonable price point.

The Aonic is an excellent first generation product I think, adding to the rather sparse corner of wireless models that sound really good, providing competent ANC as an option.

i recently acquired the JBL Club One, which, despite its flashy name, sounds quite good as well but is more compact than the Aonic: can be folded into a ball and has oval cups. Not bad, a bit more bass than the Aonic but very clear and structured. Well built, good battery life.

Seems like a nice pair of headphones, but do they really only support SBC and AAC?
That seems to be ridiculous on such high quality headphones. What are your thoughts on that? In comparison to the Shure's is possible.

I use an iPhone as my mobile source of choice, so I just care about support for AAC anyway. But AAC also offers the best balance between sound quality and (more important even) connection stability: I don't care for a small advantage in possible sound quality which LDAC may offer if the connection gets unstable under more challenging conditions such as a busy street or public transport where available Bluetooth bandwidth is scarce.

I don't care for aptX at all, in my comparison it only added a slight emphasis in the lower treble, faking a more detailed presentation. aptX HD is so bandwidth hungry that I was unable to get a stable connection from an AK380 (not the SS version I now own but the regular aluminum version) to a Beyerdynamic Amiron Wireless at home on less than 1m distance. Never tried again. The numerous variants of aptX are a negative point as well -- regular, HD, LL, whatever this new variant is called that seems to merge LL and HD -- I don't care. And I don't want to hunt down products that both support this specific variant I might want. No thanks.

LDAC would be more interesting, but still not what I'm looking for for mobile use or while working... too dependent on bandwidth. If I need that last bit of sound quality I can always switch to a cable. Which is why I only buy wireless headphones that work well without active electronics... I really dislike DSP trickery like Sony did with their 1000-whatever: they sounded abysmal without electronics. Unacceptable to me.

I understand the problem with Android, its multiple versions, upgrade problems and different levels of support for different codecs. I'm quite happy that I don't have this problem... but it's understandable that it hurts And support for different codecs is more important to Android users Than it is to me.

You might take a look at the Drop Panda, which should be a rather neutral wireless headphone supporting many codecs.
