Sometimes . . . Magic happens! - 1970's Beyerdynamic DT 220
The first 'modern' sounding vintage 1970's headphone I have had the pleasure of finding
(Ive been on a vintage headphone journey of late...)
> I found a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 220's for £23 - Even managed to find some new original pads which considering they are from the 70's was lucky... although they were almost as expensive as the headphone !
At first they had somewhat of the typical 1970's headphone sound, not a huge bass, smooth highs and forward energetic mids. They sounded a little 'plastic' or 'metallic' but there was however something different about them.
I have found that often these old headphones haven't been used for a while and it takes a while to 'warm up' the drivers again.
Inside, the cups had a simple small driver held in the plastic cup - no padding, very basic. They have an interesting piece of rubber that surrounds the driver and [as someone else commented] may be designed to touch the ear to give some physical visceral low end energy?
Anyway, I had a hunch and tried my first mod - rolled up cotton wool & cloth over the driver.
After a while flexing the driver again with music following on from the mod - Im left somewhat stunned at what these 40 year old headphones have to offer !
The sound, on the one hand, is in general neutral in nature with some of the most natural male and female vocals I have heard. Yet at the same time they have an amazing Grado like PraT that is bright, clean yet creamy smooth within the brightness.
They handle all genres really well with acoustic, jazz and classical being particularly impressive
Its a sound signature I haven't heard in any other headphone so it is a little difficult to explain
But, what is truly exceptional about them is how they separate each instrument - It's not that they have a huge soundstage but the way each instrument has its own space is amazing. They seem to choose certain parts of the mix and have great skill in putting them in their own space and yet the sound remains quite energetic and engaging.
They have a 3D around the head imaging that makes a real joy to listen to the audio never mind the music!
I believe they are 400 oHm - They certainly come alive with a portable headphone amp.
The only downside is the weird shape of the headphone [band?] It seems the top of the cups is tighter than the bottom side of the cups so a perfect seal is not easy, although with a bit of adjusting its fine.
As a final mod I part glued on some velour pads i had spare.
For such an old pair of headphones I am finding these being used for my daily listen - surprising in that I have many fine headphones - perhaps more surprising for a 1970's headphone
The end result :
