How do they compare to what we have now?
It is still my favorite IEM, 2 broken and 2 still in service.
Very good sound isolation, super dynamic, warm and musical, great for Basshead.

Another 2 favorite IEMs.
Stax SR-001
Sony MDR-EX800ST (still in production)

I don't think many IEMs nowadays are worth the price...

Out of the only driver pics that I've seen, there were 5 different codes, but their meanings are not yet clear.

This is likely the only reliable info on the different known versions:

021 - black magnet + white baffle damping (acoustic lens unknown) (no measurement) (from 'The Legendary Prince' thread)
121 - black magnet + black baffle damping + white acousitic lens 'donut' damping version (huge rolloff in bass and treble)
521 - metallic magnet + white paper damping (no acoustic lens damping) (neutral) (I own this one)
531
- appears to be the same as 521 (@Feilong4 owns this one)
721 - metallic magnet + white paper damping (acoustic lens unknown) (no measurement) (from Japanese blog)

Seems like if it starts with 5, it should be a keeper.
From visuals alone, 7 should be fine too.

Since Purk owns the one starting 021, it's probably safe to assume it's also a keeper.

The only known one to absolutey avoid is the version with black baffle paper (121).
Late surge, turns out I have the 021 version. The only one we cannot be sure about. :) If anyone knows what this means, please give us a shout :)

And perhaps their most interesting party piece.

Hifiman came up with a removable back open/closed headphone a couple of years ago. Not such a new idea, then…

Are those electrets, orthos or just very power-hungry?

Just playing my two Pioneer SE-300, they sound quite differently. The previous one is like a bass heavy version, this new one is more natural with better highs and details.

Although the earpads are not in the same condition, I don't think it makes this huge difference.

Very interesting... Something similar to AKG K340.

found a Sony MDR-5A with 1/4 plug and 8' cable while cleaning up this weekend
looks like it's still working but needs new pads
Is it worth restoring or just trash?
Saw one on eBay listed for sale at $600
need to find the original walkman it came with
Weird
