I was pondering this same thing, but I really don't think you could use it as an LO seeing as it's a line in cable... Even so, I think somebody would have discovered it by now.
However, I've decided to keep my J3. For one, the sound quality really is very good. If I switched to an iPod I would lose the magnificent BBE EQ settings I adore so much. More importantly though, a pure line out signal going through an amp is only really filtering that same line out signal through the chips in the amp (in a simplistic view, that is) to makes it sound different, hence removing any EQ you could have. Even if you're just using the HO of your player, an amp will probably still fix any sort of rolloff issues, and your EQ can still be used.
The way I see it, LO=just one EQ setting all the time.
The only thing sound wise the J3 has over an ipod is the EQ. I actually like the sound of the recent ipods better when everything is flat and using low impedance phones. There really isn't an upgrade or downgrade in sound.
To be honest, I'm switching from a rockboxed cowon d2 to my iphone 4, and while the sound isn't quite on par yet, it really isn't that bad. It seems like the biggest problem with the sound quality is the internal amp of the device, and even that can be overcome because you can now adjust a 10 band eq using itunes (it's a bit of a pain though). The sound quality of ipod's have been slowly improving it seems, and I'd be curious to see if how they sound with a lineout and an amp.
I have never had the chance to listen to a Cowon product, I am sad about that. But I gotta tell ya I have recently purchased a 7th gen Ipod 160 GB unit. I liked the sound out of the headphone jack much more than I did with my 6th Gen version. I then bought an LOI and have been using a new Piio E7 with it. This weekend I spent almost five hours listening to this combo and my ears aren't bleeding. No sir. I think I am ready for more. I would would not call this setup poor, I'd give it two snaps twice, in a Z formation. (a good thing)
But yeah, keep the J3 no matter what.
(for reference, I have $225 into the Ipod, and $85 into the E7, with an additional $15 for the Piio LOI)
never, but never take an ipod in front of a cowon product for music....
amp can be used with cowon ho....
just, it isn;t worth to buy, because the sound is good as it is....
j3 can drive 150 ohm headphones..... you may not need an amp at all, if you need louder sound is good....
j3's ho is the same as any ipod lo..... it;s even slightly better!...

People are generalizing Ipods here which is a flawed way to look at it. Each Ipod model sounds different and has different functions I personally would only go for the new Ipod touch or Iphone 3GS/4 because of all the extras it has over the stand alone J3, with sound that's up to par and good EQing in the Equalizer and EQu apps both of which also function with the LO . That or a classic because of it's sheer size and because rockbox will put it on par with the Cowons EQ wise if you can be patient enough to wait. From the HO the Touch 4 and 3GS impressed me personally.
The iPod Touch measures 111mm x 58.9mm x 7.2mm and weighs 101g. The Cowon J3 measures 106mm x 56mm x 10mm and weighs 74g. Even though the size difference does not seem like much, the J3 just seems so much smaller to me, and the fact that the iPod Touch weighs 36% more than the J3 makes it seem even more cumbersome. The 2:3 aspect ratio of the screen also makes watching widescreen videos appear much smaller than on the J3.
PS - All of that pales next to the fact that I HATE ITUNES!
yes, inded, what freeky says is relevant.... are u sure u want to be absolutley dependend on Itunes for the rest of your ipod using career?....
i was deciding between ipod touch4 and samsung galaxy s for video/gaming performance, and i am much more into the galaxy s.... itunes makes life so much more hrader....
There is always some dependency on Apple services or software, which in this case makes iTunes having to be installed just for the sake of a framework being installed, that enables the user to access the iPod through MediaMonkey or other apps other than iTunes.

Months ago, a friend sent me home with an old Nano he'd bought for his girlfriend, and he asked me to load it with tunes.....I did so with Mediamonkey, and that was before I had ever installed iTunes. Maybe it's different with newer iPods though.
