Shanling Q1 - Retro-Styled Portable Hi-Fi Music Player

Not the one you quoted, but for me it's little niches such as the ability to sort e.g. by albums (folder skip is not the same thing, you can't use shuffle to jump to another random album), to use other file system or to choose the typeface. UX-wise multi-press like what done in Sxmo could also allow changing playlist ordering mode or toggling button lock.

None of these is particularly difficult to support in theory, but the licensing nature of MTouch OS does not allow one to patch it, and constantly nudging Shanling for certain features is not exactly pleasant for either side. It'd be best if they can release the OS as FOSS, plus the future maintainability when (hypothetically) the company decides to stop supporting the device or go under.
Honestly the only updates I would like to see on the Q1 is the ability to change font size and to show the artist on the List Play screen. I would make the track name font smaller so more of the track name is shown as the scrolling is simply to slow and usually does not show the whole track name before the albumart screen comes up. Either that or make the font smaller and make the track name wrap instead of the scrolling as it is now. When Shanling was using the Hiby OS there was a utility that would allow you to change fonts among other things.

Currently we have no plans to replace Q1, at least for this year. To be honest, there isn't much that could be changed in its platform.

In other price ranges, current market is only in Android devices.
Sorry to hear that, any chance of an MTouch OS update in the meantime? I would still like to see the track name font on the now playing screen smaller to show more of the track name since scrolling is so slow. Or make the font smaller and wrap the text, it would be nice to see the artist name on the List Play screen. I really think a $300 M2X updated unit would be of interest. I would certainly be a buyer, only reasons I did not get an M2X was the 10 hour battery life and reported issues with the volume wheel.

Those are the exact same problems I have with my M5s! Both problems are real for me.

I thought the M5S got like 17 hours of battery life? I considered it as well for awhile and then it disappeared from the Canadian dealers sites and I forgot about it. It is a shame that Shanling gave up on the M5S and M2X before releasing versions with better wheels and battery life both of which they addressed with the much cheaper Q1. Both got great reviews when they were first released and then the volume wheel issues started showing up on the threads.

@Shanling saying there is not much more they can do with the platform certainly doesn't ring true for the M5S and M2X. Fixing mechanical issues would be an improvement for sure. They wouldn't need to change the design much, just update the wheel and put in a bigger battery and they might still sell units. The more I read about issues with android based DAP's the more I wish Linux based DAP's were more popular.

If your unit is within warranty period, please reach out to your to your seller in regards to any wheel or battery issue.

@Shanling

I've owned a Q1 for a while. I've enjoyed the sound via LDAC but decided to try using it via USB connection to my phone.

I've read through this thread and seen that the Q1 wasn't optimised for use with phones so it goes into charging mode when connected to phones via USB.

Has this issue been resolved? Or is there no intention to? I'm on firmware 2.2.

Another question, can Qobuz be installed onto the Q1 and stream directly via WiFi?

If so, where can I find instructions on how to do this?

We do not plan to be adjusting system on Q1 for use as UBS DAC with phones.

There is no Qobuz support on Q1.

Shanling please add option on the next update to disable album art, sometimes it's complicated to make it fit the screen resolution. Black background is no big deal, Fiio has this as option.

We do not plan to add such setting to the Q1.

There are 2 resolutions that work perfectly. If you want to fill the entire screen then use 360 x 360, 72 dpi jpg (will compress image on the sides), make sure it is saved as baseline standard jpg. If you want the artwork to fit with the same aspect ratio then use 400 x 400, 72 dpi it will fit perfectly edge to edge on the sides and leave black bars on the top and bottom.

I use 400 x 400 so the volume, time and battery indicator are never obscured by artwork. The 360 x 360 stretched makes the artwork look awkward due to the compression on the sides. All 13,000+tracks on my Q1 display the albumart. I use mp3tag to embed the artwork for all the tracks in each album. I find just putting albumart into the album folder can be a little hit or miss.

I am sorry to say that Shanling's lack of information about the future of their MTouch OS DAP's has led me to do the previously unthinkable. I just ordered a Sony A55 even though I know the Q1 sounds better. It is the lack of attention on the software side by Shanling and their MTouch OS. The decision was made easier by the existence of the MrWalkman CustomOne firmware that provides WM1Z tuning to the 20x cheaper A55. I can't fault the Q1 on the hardware side at all it is a great sounding DAP. But simple changes like shrinking the track name font size on the playback screen so longer track names can be seen before the albumart pops up. Not providing the artist name in the Playback list and not providing scrolling for the track names or wrapping the text so you can see the full track name on longer tracks. They seem trivial but I miss having these things on my previous Sony and even Fiio DAP's. I have had my Q1 now for 19 months and it has been rock solid and still going strong. I may hold onto it for awhile until I break in the A55 but I do know any number of people who would love to get their hands on my Q1 so it will definitely have a good home no matter what.

I sincerely hope that the Q1 is not the end of the line for the MTouch DAP's and if Shanling were to release another one in the future it would surely jump to the top of my list.

The Q1 is a good device but it in my experience doesn't handle larger (12k+) library very well. Out of the box the Q1 sounds better than the A55 but the custom firmware from MrWalkman shifts the advantage to the A55.
