May we get some reviews of the M6 PRO?
@someyoungguy
In all honesty I returned it. I had it for a few days and clocked up a bit of burn in and listening time, but realized the sound just wasn’t for me. We all hear different so for others it may hit all the right notes. Build quality was great and as you can see from the Shanling threads here on head-fi the customer service is outstanding.
I’d never owned a Shanling DAP before and had heard their house sound described with words like “dry” and “chasing”. But it’s so hard to get a handle on how that sounds with such ambiguous terms (a problem with a lot of reviews I find), so wasn’t sure what to expect, but think I now have some idea.
It has great detail, layering and soundstage. Up there with my previous DX200 with amp8 if that means anything, which I think is to be expected given the trends of improving sound quality over the last few years. The treble was a bit too bright for my tastes, although it improved after the first few days, but retained a kind of “dry”, detailed approach. Bass is impressive, and particularly bass layering and individuation of different simultaneous bass sounds - I heard more prominent bass guitar lines and nuances I hadn’t previously heard in some tracks, for example.
Only slight niggle function-wise was if I made a small adjustment in volume with the wheel sometimes it would go opposite for the first few clicks (i.e. slight turn up may result in slight decrease in volume) before heading in the right direction. (A similar thing actually happens with my mouse wheel).
So yes it is certainly impressive and my returning it isn’t a reflection of thinking it was *bad*. More that I’m looking for a DAP to keep for 5+ years and despite it’s good qualities I didn’t really emotionally connect with the music as much as I’d like, and wasn’t itching to keep listening to more and more, which is the kind of feeling I’ve had with other players I’ve loved.
