Shanling M6 Player - New version with ESS DACs coming soon
Aug 31, 2020 at 11:34 PM Post #962 of 1,456
I vaguely recall it being mentioned that the M6 (and M6 Pro) would at some point get a newer version of Android. Is that still happening? Or - honest question - did I misunderstand that?

(Also, gapless playback would really be nice.)

It was in our plans, but currently uncertain.

Might be a dumb question, but have you tried a different usb cable ?
As they say, there are no dumb questions, and I thank you for taking the time. At this point, I'd sprinkle goats' blood on the damned thing if I thought it would revive it. As it happens, having already tried two different cables and chargers to no avail, I took some advice from Shanling, above, on board, to wait a day, and also yours. Before I went to bed last night I used the provided data cable to plug it into a USB port in my PC. Instantly, the red LCD flickered on, went off, and there were signs of life. I left it overnight and it's now awake ("It's alive! Aliiiiiiiive!!") but I'm having to re-load the library. Mysteriously, the Shanling app had exactly one song on it, and not event he one I was playing on it last. I've now unplugged it from the USB and it's happily updating, and all looks hopeful.

Of course, I still have no idea what's happened here or why it went so utterly dead on me and why it would choose to spring back to life now -- or even how long this will last -- so if anyone has an answer for that, it would be appreciated.

Thank you again for taking the time to reply!

Thanks -- mysteriously, this seems to have worked. I'm baffled but relieved. Any idea why it would do this? Thanks again!

It's kind of glitch in charging system. Was more common on early firmware, but latest versions put a stop to it in almost all cases.

I received my Shanling M6 yesterday. After a few hours of charging, updating to FW 3.2.2, and learning to navigate the Android OS, I was ready to see what it does, SQ wise.

I must say, I was really amazed at what I heard. Used my Alpha & Delta AD01 IEM's via the regular SE 3.3 mm jack.

There are not words to express my astonishment at how fantastic the SQ is. I have fully balanced DAC and a Glenn Tube amp for a desktop rig (that I really enjoy) but was astonished at how different, how incredibly clear, detailed, nuanced, deep and soaring, with the illusion of "there" the Shanling and the AD01 are.

Everything I threw at the M6 came back, a whole new, and beautiful sonic experience. Hard to find words for how surprised and pleased I am.

Have balanced IEM's on the way, balanced cables for currently owned IEM's also on the way. And, have the TinHiFi P1, 10mm planar magnetic's w/upgraded balanced cable, on the way. Things are only going to get more exciting, from here.

Can't believe I didn't do this, sooner!

Cheers @Shanling, thank you for the fantastic product!

Just to say, I got one of those silicone sleeves for my M6 (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/313138403906) and am seriously impressed. It seems to come all the way from China, but didn't take forever and, as they obviously include postage (while saying "postage free"), it doesn't get stopped for customs and duty, which can double the price of some stuff coming from abroad. It's a snug, secure fit that keeps the graceful design of the device while also preventing it sliding, inexorably off of any even-slightly uneven surface. I just wish I'd done a better job of putting the screen protector on.

Hi Shanling,

Recently just got a M6, very pleased with the sound. Just a question on the included Shanling player though, every time it moves to the next track, there is a noticeable cut to the first few milliseconds of the song. I have tracks that start on 0:00 so it sounds really weird when the song starts off beat. Also, there is an audible click when skipping tracks as well. I downloaded other players on the M6 to check if it was a hardware issue but it was working well.

Is this something that we can expect a fix soon, and will there going to be a feature on the player anytime soon where you can have crossfade, gapless or fade out?

Yeah, the sound quality of the Shanling app is without a doubt the best of all the player apps I've tried on it. But it's also missing a lot of features. It's weird how I took gapless playback for granted... Probably my biggest criticism of what otherwise is a fantastic player.

Likewise, I tried other players it but all of them fall short of the sound quality of the shanling player. Hope they'll address it soon

I've been happy with Poweramp, but while I'll agree about the Shanling player's sound on the Shanling, I've found it has trouble updating the library, for instance:I added about five albums over the last couple of days and, when they didn't appear in the library, I ran the update manually, but it just circled and didn't indicate any new songs. I've gone back into the library today and the albums still aren't there. I'd also use it if it gave me gapless, as well - I've been listening to a lot of classical recently, as well as a lot of concept albums from my progrock days, and gapless is kind of essential to keep the flow. Finally, while I realise it's a very minor consideration, a better interface would be nice. I tend to list by artist and only about one in every four have photos by their names in the Shanling app, with no option to add them, as far as I can tell (as opposed to Poweramp, which has a facility for you to do so).

So far still not sure when our software team can produce fix for this :pensive:
