So much money for so little battery life.

It's just about acceptable at M0 price. It's not even close at this price.

Buy a $25 power bank.

Unless battery life is atrocious (2-3 hours), I've never understood the complaining about it. Those things are cheap and easy to carry around and charge stuff like this several times. "Problem" solved.

Unless you're a mountain climber, but then you're just insane for other reasons....

I hope this get on Massdrop. The specs look awesome. I wanted a non-android DAP with DNLA.

We don't plan to have any of current production models on Massdrop.

Will the M5 supports an EQ via BT (LDAC); how many bands has the EQ and how is the amplification +/-12?
What kind of GUI has the M5? How many views has the G5? for example title, artist, album, genre with artist and album?
Which kind of display has the M5? LCD or OLED? How good is the display (brightness, contrast)?
Will the M5 supports gapless playback (FLAC only or MP3 in add)?

AND why just a pure battery life for all the DAP's (excluding Sony)?
Sony's 100 and 300 offer a great battery life! It is possible!

AND why only one card slot?
AND why NO internal memory? The discussion about memory is funny... since years!
I need 1 TB storage for all my files!

EQ is effective even when streaming over BT. Current version can be changed in 10 bands, from -6 to +6 dB.
M5s has our own MTouch system, preview can be seen in video on first page of this thread.
You can browse music through Folders, Artist, Album, Composer. It also tracks files and lists Recent and Frequent files. You can customize home screen, choose which items and in which order they will show up.

Screen is TFT LCD. It's significantly brighter than previous screen used on M2s and M3s.

Gapless still needs little adjusting, most formats works fine, mp3 has there tiny gap.

Sony approach to the audio circuit is quite unique and is powered by the all resources and funds Sony has for their audio division. Yet while it results in better battery life, it has some drawbacks.

Internal memory simply doesn't make sense with current state of market. Putting there something like 16 or 32 GB is just laughable, putting there 256 GB will in the end push price of device much higher than if customer bought bigger card.

Most people judge the price of DAP based on sound quality and features. We believe battery life on M5s is even above standard of comparable DAPs.

Of course we can take big brick, stuff inside M0 with tiny screen and attach huge battery for 100 hour playback. But not sure if people in modern society would truly care about it.

Yeah I agree with others, 16 hours battery life for a DAP with this much power is pretty damn good compared to the competition. Also with standby good for what, 30 days unless you plan to listen for 16 hours straight it should last quite awhile before the battery fully drains.

I generally only have to charge my M0 once a week and I listen 60 to 90 minutes a day commuting for work.

My Sony A17 has about double the battery life but doesn't last nearly as long on standby so I basically had to charge them both about the same or roughly once a week.

Also with Sony DAP's if you start turning on features like DSEE HX and other enhancements the battery life will drop.

If you remove Sony from the comparisons and stick to the smaller manufacturers like Shanling, Fiio and Cayin then Shanling truly stands out in terms of sound quality, power, features and yes even battery life. These smaller DAP makers simply don't have the resources Sony does and even still hold their own against Sony quite well in alot of areas. Especially in terms of availability, at least in Canada.

Very interesting DAP.

1) Could the volume dial be turn up or down accidentally if placed in a pocket while walking?

2) What are the chances of a reliable Tidal/wifi integration? Most DAPs, like the Hiby R3, have issues with Tidal & wifi reliability.

Wheel is recessed into body to reduce this. You can get leather case, that protects it even more.

Regarding Tidal, we will do our best to make it work as good as possible.

And also, the Sony DAPs don't have nearly as strong amps as some of the other devices. I used to own the A20 Walkman, and it had a pretty good amp on it, but it definitely doesn't offer enough "juice" to power anything above like 100 ohms. Same with Sony's Xperia line of phones. They're always rated very low in terms of headphone amp output power vs. other smartphones. Still, I'm a big Sony fan despite these "imperfections". But for a DAP, yeah I'd rather buy a Shanling, Astell & Kern, or Cayin than a Sony.

Hello.
Apologies if these questions have been asked before but I am new here.
1. Will the M5S support hibylink, if not, when will Shanling introduce their own version? I want to plug this device digital out via coax / usb into my home hifI DAC into amplifier and control from my android phone on the sofa via bluetooth. It is essential for me.
2. What are the digital outputs ? Usb / coax / optical?
3. Who is UK stockist and UK price and date available roughly?

Sorry if this has already been mentioned but does it have digital outlet? The old M5 had coax I think.

It has digital USB out.

1) It has nothing to do with HiBY, so it doesn't support HiBy link. no ETA on our own version so far.
2) Digital USB out
3) In UK go to the Hifiheadphones, you can send them message regarding their price.

Welcome to Head-Fi. Sorry about your wallet.

Do notice the search function at the top of the page which can be restricted to this thread only. It would have answered these questions and is faster than asking.

As for stockists, I got my M0 at Advanced MP3 Players. They may well carry M5s when it arrives. Look out for discount vouchers for AMP3. These are often available.
