Shanling M3X Portable Player - Our smallest Android Player

Hi there!

I've had my shanling M3X for about a week now and have been having pretty constant trouble with third party music apps that I cannot seem to find the solution to.

So far the only music app that I can get to actually just WORK is the built in shanling app. Every other app has a bad tendency to hitch and stop playing during tracks, or just fail to load the next track in an album or playlist. Tidal, Amazon music, Spotify, and Hiby music all suffer from this. This occurs whether online, or downloaded and offline.

The problem is exacerbated when I have the music downloaded to an SD card, In which case the music often simply will not load until I pull the device out of my pocket and close the app and reopen it. However the problem persists even when streaming or downloaded to internal storage.

It seems to be random in frequency. Sometimes I can go ten tracks just fine and then it will begin pausing, failing to load, and outright crashing.

This is a large bummer, as I have a very small collection of digital music and planned to heavily rely on this devices ability to download tidal tracks.

As it stands I've just spent 330 dollars for a replacement for my btr5 and have ended up using it in the same manner.

If anyone has any solution to this problem it would unbelievably appreciated.
I have owned M3x three times now. Currently got the limited edition one. I have never experienced any issues in music streaming/offline music playback with any of the units I had. I have used Apple Music, Spotify regularly and even uapp too for downloaded offline music. Maybe try resetting your device.

Sadly I have reset it and it's still occurring. I've ordered a separate SD card reader to see if I can't reformat the SD card to a format that will work better like exfat. I have been trying to figure out how to format this SanDisk ultra as internal storage as I read that worked better but my only option in the OS is to format it as portable storage.

I'll second @gadgetgod on this one, only had the one but no issues with anything really. Bluetooth not brilliant with some old galaxy buds but was on the move and was in a deep pocket and think had codec settings a bit off. Uapp and power amp both work well with offline files and amazon for streaming hd

Don't format to internal storage or the SD card won't work in any other device. That process "marries" the card to the device. Have you simply just formatted it in the device to normal external storage and reloaded the music? That would be the most reliable way IMO. I also have an M3X that works fine without these issues. It is also possible that the card is simply bad.

Sad man, I hope it gets sorted for you soon!! Maybe try switching the memory stick.

Hi, I have my M3X back from getting serviced in China... and it sort of works. The original problem was it pretty much died after a month... would not power on. That's fixed and now it powers on again, phew.

The Shanling Music app works brilliantly. Tidal is doing fine too. But, all I get from all other Android apps is a weird digital static (games, VLC, podcast, etc...). Am I doing something wrong? Have a bad setting? Is the player damaged in some way still? Tried reinstalling them, updated to the latest firmware, rebooted... no joy.

Frankly, I love my Shanling M8... it's a great machine. I have high hopes for the M3X as a lighter, smaller mini-me for knocking around more casually with less fears of breaking the precious...

Any ideas?

Try a complete device reset maybe and use default settings? If that doesn't fix it something must be wrong with the device.

Never saw such report of "digital static" on the output. Is this with wired or Bluetooth headphones? Make sure you close other audio apps before opening new one.

Hi @Shanling, I have an M3X that has been quite good—until now. I recently was using an iFi xDSD Gryphon as an external DAC/amp, and I wanted to use the M3X as a transport. While the Shanling app works great in this configuration, Apple Music (3.7.2, Apkpure) is having a lot of trouble outputting to the external DAC. When it does finally output, there are clicks and pops (and there's no vinyl mode I'm aware of!) that are pretty aggravating.

Apple Music 3.7.2 on another Android 10 device (from Google Play, albeit) works great, suggesting it's not something intrinsic in Apple Music.

On the M3X, I'm running build 1.5.3. No other music apps were open.

Any suggestions or fix for this would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone got random constant “tzk” (the same sound when you change music mid playing in youtube) sound when using m3x as dac? I tried 2 usb c port and 3 cables and a reboot, still have that electronic sound, while i tried using same cable and port to xd05 basic it is clean
Edit: 😣 i lowered the bit rate from 32bit/48k to 24/96k so far its clean

Thanks @rlw6534 and @Shanling.

I am using wired headphones. The static moves from ear to ear, and seems like perhaps its unprocessed audio? I've no idea really... just sad that the M3X is still not working.

I've now tried the total reset and system wipes, reinstalled apps... a couple of times... that didn't seem to produce joy.
The Shanling player app and Tidal app work fine, all other android apps just make static.

Such a different experience than I've had with my M8.

Will check on this. Did you tested any other USB DAC?

We saw few reports on this and software team is investigating.

No idea what might be causing this, especially as it's picky between apps.

Can it act as Roon end point? I do have Roon running on NUC and would want to use it to play music on this DAP, will it work?

You can use the Roon Remote app to play on the M3x. Unfortunately the app doesn't support high-resolution on any Android device.
