Shanling M3s - dual AK4490 DAC, 2.5 balanced out, aptX BT, HiBy link, USB out, FW 1.7

Hello I've had the Shanling M3S for more than a month now. So far very happy with my purchase. I use a AK x JH Audio Michelle Limited with it and soon planning to get an Audioquest Nightowl as my headphones (I've listened with them together and they sound good and perhaps I'll be picking up the Chord Mojo to go with it).

Although I just listen to music most of the time, I also watch movies/shows on my phone while commuting.

I'm very happy that I can actually connect my phone to the Shanling via Bluetooth but I hear a very noticeable delay during playback, this also happens when trying to play games where it will be more obvious since you're clicking on menus with a sound feedback and it's obviously delayed.

I've also tried using the M3S as a DAC for my PC (using USB-C to USB-A) and hear a very noticeable delay when trying to watch videos or trying to play games. I guess you will not really notice it when you're just listening to music but it's very obvious when you hear it with video.

Is this a known issue? Am I doing something wrong? Any way to fix this? I'm more concerned with the Bluetooth part since I have another DAC for my PC, but sometimes I just want to use my IEMs (with the balanced cables) without switching the connector to 3.5mm on my phone or I want to watch videos without the wire on my phone at least. Anyone else have the same issues please help me out (I've been lurking at this forum for a while and finally decided to register and post)

This are known things for M3s.

USB delay is given by used USB solution, where the USB DAC is kind of secondary function(to charging and data transfer).

On BT, this is delay connected to all BT connections, only one not affected is special aptX low latency. You can have a look at this article to learn more: https://www.rtings.com/headphones/learn/sbc-aptx-which-bluetooth-codec-is-the-best

Hello I use a Samsung Galaxy S8+ and even enabled developer settings to manually select AptX but it keeps reverting/defaulting back to SBC codec when I connect it with the M3S no matter how I try, is this a device specific issue?

On M3s, the receiver mode only support SBC codec. Hardware limitation of used chip.

BULGED BATTERY

Hello. I have had my M3S for about 3 months now. Yesterday I noticed that the back of the M3s had popped open. At first I thought that it's just the glue that came off and so I tried to fix it, but it wouldn't fully close.
Then I noticed that it was because the battery was a bit bulged and this is the reason why the back had popped open.

I was worried that the slightly bulged battery might cause some issues, so I disconnected the battery and removed it from the back. Now I cannot use the device also when plugged-in because it simply shuts down saying "Low Battery".

Is it possible to provide a firmware update that will allow to boot the device in USB dac mode even if the battery indicator is empty (battery disconnected) ?
Please note that this is a brand new device bought from Amazon - only 3 months old. I really like using the M3S with the balanced connection to my headphones. Please help.

Thank you.

Definitely contact your seller and demand replacement unit.

Thank you for your reply. I have contacted Amazon.co.uk and they are sending me a replacement.
I still have the same question I asked you 2 months back. Is it possible to provide a firmware update with an option to not charge the battery to 100% all the time if it's plugged-in as an USB DAC ? Also it would be great, if the M3S can still work as an USB DAC if the battery is removed.

The reason I ask for this is because I use the M3S as an USB DAC always connected to my laptop. I am afraid that in another 3 months, it will have the same problem with a bulged battery. I use it for many hours a day and it's always charging too since it's always connected as USB DAC.

Current system already is managing the charging, so there should be no problems with some overcharging.. And definitely no plans for special mode for use without battery.

Overcharge protection ? Obviously not ! I only used it for about 3 months, couple of hours every day and already the battery was bulged.
Let's see how long the replacement lasts .. If the same happens to the replacement unit, then I'll most probably won't buy another Shanling device again and I'll make sure that others are aware of this as well.

Hi,

Anyone have tested the M3s to stream Spotify through a smartphone can tell me about the sound quality? Is there a significant downgrade in SQ due to Bluetooth compression, in comparison with stored music?

I don't use Spotify but frequently stream Radio Paradise from my phone to my M3s via Bluetooth. The audio quality is nearly as good as that of files stored on the DAP, to my ears.

You are probably the first one to report bulged battery on M3s. I'm truly sorry it happened to you, in rare occasions any battery can show such problem.

Sorry I didnt mean to offend you. I understand that under rare circumstances this can happen.

I bought the M3S to use as a desktop dac/amp, always plugged-in. Perhaps it is not made for that and it was my mistake. I ordered another real desktop dac+amp this time which has no battery and works on power. I also have a Sony Walkman and so I have now 2 portable DAPs. Oh well, a spare is always good I suppose :)

Hello everyone!

My problem is that display brightness is very low.
Even after i have set brightness in settings to max values it is to low.

The backlight is brighter when the player is loading.
After the player has loaded backlight become too low.

Different version of firmwares does take any changes.

Who have the same issue with display backlight ?

I think we all have this issue. The screen brightness is way too low and makes it difficult to read text.
