Shanling M3 Ultra - New Update for our Compact Android Portable Player

Apr 24, 2024 at 9:13 PM Post #106 of 137
I bit the bullet and purchased an M3U. Already mentioned in the M3X thread that that units volume wheel stopped working and I wanted an upgrade anyway. Looking forward in receiving it. Ended up buying the green one :)
What tipped the scale was a podcast by Darko Audio on the M3U. Expect to receive it early next week, hopefully.

Now: I need to trim down the content on my 500Gb SD card because I need new music on there.. a daunting task.
I purchased a 1Tb brand new card, it didn't do anything - not showing up as a drive on the iMac, nor in the DAP..very strange. So I returned it and it got lost in the mail :frowning2:Instead of buying another one right away I will try and learn to control myself a bit, besides I will install Bandcamp & Tidal so I should have enough to listen to..

Will check right out of the box which firmware it runs on, can I just upgrade to the newest even it is would be a few versions back? Trust I can.
For cards, I have to really recommend purchasing only from 100% reliable sources. Go with your big electronic stores or photography shops. Never buy from Ebay or even Amazon. I get so often emails with people complaining about their 1TB or 2TB cards, just to find out they got fake.

I live in Shenzhen and it's so funny to see the amount of fake cards going around.

It has arrived safely, thanks to Audiophonics. I picked up a 1Tb sd card this morning locally (no more postal services for this stuff thank you) and I am now loading it up with music. Of course I put Tidal and Bandcamp on there as well...
Happy I remembered I needed the developer mode for USB debugging to make sure it read the sd card.

It looks gorgeous, the green really does do it justice.
For the time being I will just use the Shanling app even with the annoying non-gapless playback, but I like the interface and overall sound it offers. It builds the library quite fast and it doesn't require me to re-confirm my playstore login when I use it at the most inconvenient times.

Anyway, looking forward in spending manieth happy hours with this little gizmo.
For those interested: Inear wireless I use the Sennheiser Momentum true wireless 4, wired the Sennheiser IE300 with a balanced cable, Overear and wired Meze 99 classic w/balanced cable, Sennheiser HD660S w/balanced cable. All depending on the situation of course.

Can you please tell me why was that needed on your system? It should work just fine without it.

I am on a iMac and using a program to make android machines visible. If I plug in an android phone or Dap, it does not show up. I had the hardest time with the M3X getting it to show up, and although it I managed to make the M3U visible, the SD card simply wouldn't show.

Never mind that, I fixed it like this and it works just fine now.

PSA: M3U doesn't play music in Plex app at all. Before V1.24 update it had played subpar normally, but after 1.24 it refuses to play at all. Here are logs on Plex forum. Same with Plexamp - somewhat player shows that it plays at 192khz even when Plexamp is uses just 48khz. logs for Plexamp.

Are there any update to fix that? @Shanling ?

No updates on Plex compatibility.

@Shanling , the M3 Ultra manual says QC3.0 is supported, it also recommends a 5V 2A adapter. I cannot find a UK-plug QC3 charger rated at less than 3 amps. Would a 3 amp QC3 charger be safe to use?
If you are using normal USB charger, it simply states 3A as maximum. With the M3 UItra it will simply adjust it to correct current.

I am trying different music player apps, Neutron, UAPP and Poweramp.
2 problems:
Poweramp is not working, or better put, it is giving me distortion, low volume and slowed down playback. I cckked around and found one user on Reddit describing this exact problem. He solved it by returning the M3u and getting an ibasso dx260. That is twice the price of an M3u so that won't help me. But I have no idea how to get Poweramp working. It works just fine on my phone (an old Huawei).
I should have started by saying I just bought a Focal Bathys I'd like to marginally tweak. And since it is a subtle tweak I need, the stock eq from the Shanling app does not cut it. Which brings me to issue nr. 2:

I can't get any third party equalizer to work on the M3u. I twiddles settings, DVC on and off, but nothing works. So to be clear, I have downloaded the separate Poweramp eq app, Wavelet and another Bluetooth headphone eq app, none of them I can get to work on the M3u.

Anyone has any ideas on what to try next? I'd really like to to tweak my headphones a little. The headphone app itself works, but isn't refined enough for my taste.
It just feels like there is a hardware setting somewhere that disables the 3rd party eq apps?

I have UAPP and Flat Equalizer Here running on my M3u and M6u. they both work well for me. The key thing on Flat equalizer is NOT to turn up the loudness setting more than a few percent as it will induce distortion (at least it does for the majority of my IEM's). FWIW I couldn't get PowerAmp to work either.

Thanks, deleted Poweramp, will try to get flat eq to work. But good to hear it's possible. The only thing Poweramp had going were specific presets for my headphone, which it recognized immediately. But since the playback was not there it's kind of useless.
(bit frustrating because it worked on my phone and the results were marvelous)

I need to fiddle a bit more it seems.
