Shanling M1: An iPod Nano Competitor / DAP || USB DAC || USB Transport || Bluetooth 4.0 + aptX || DSD
Nov 21, 2016 at 2:07 AM Post #1,473 of 3,480
EDIT: Eliminated the X1 due to overwhelming complaints online about poor UI and slow processing/library scanning. Thanks!

If I don't use the M1's DAC function and DSD support which is better?
I noticed Fiio X1 2nd Gen has a low pass filter (does that help?) and other than higher output impedance actually the other specs appear to be better than the M1....

I'm in a dilemma as I don't want to change too soon and now both are roughly the same price from China (actually the X1 is cheaper by a little) :)

I'm sending a well-known headfi buddy the M1 to audition soon because he's not satisfied with Plenue D if that days anything...

Actually that's not saying very much because you haven't specified what makes him unsatisfied with the Plenue D. Furthermore the comparison is pending and there aren't any conclusions and final thoughts on the differences between the products.

A headfi buddy I play a high level of trust in is driving Senn HD600 straight out of M1 and is quite impressed with how good it sounds. At 15 Ohm impedance and 119 dB/mW sensitivity, it doesn't look like Roxanne is very hard to drive, certainly should be easier than HD600. And M1's output impedance is less than 1 Ohm, so you don't need to worry about the M1 altering Roxanne's FR. Hope that helps...

Not only the M1 drives the HD650 pretty well as it almost does the job for the K701. Quite impressive.

I just tried it on my M1, it is loud enough but don't think it can "drive" HD650. It is very thin, no depth, no body.

Once in a while, we get a discussion like this about a source driving a full-size headphone. Some will like it then some will say it can't.

My take? Look at it objectively. M1 only has around 1Vrms of output. Enough to drive HD650 to around 96dB. Most pop recordings may sound fine since they were probably mastered deliberately at or beyond clipping point to make them louder (See loudness war.)

But play a better mastered  or a high quality recording I doubt you can get loud enough volume to make it sound satisfactory. This and you are driving M1 at max capcity and beyond clipping point anyway. So I think it's not worth it.

I tried my HD800 for kicks and giggles but not going to enjoy the listening experience much because it just can't get loud enough for me most of the time. And it is more efficient than the HD650.

That is my reality though.

On face value, I will say X1-II spec is, at least to me, a little better than M1. But subjectively speaking, I'll say they both sound pretty similar in overall SQ to my ears. That is, they are both in the entry level of audiophile DAP market.

As for stability - besides that library does scan slower on X1-II (though it isn't so slow that I can't live with it), I'll say that both X1-II and M1 are more than stable enough for music playback in general, but they both have bugs that need to be fixed. I won't say one is in any significant way worst than the other.

Fair enough. Just pointing out that one of my headfi buddies who knows how stuff isn't satisfied with Plenue D and is looking at M1 as a possible replacement after hearing my M5. Make of it what you will...

Thanks everyone for your views, happy to say I am joining the Shanling M1 camp for now. Waiting for my black M1 bundled with stick-on screen protectors and a Samsung Evo+ card eagerly :D
