Shanling ET3 - Dedicated Digital CD Transport, With USB Drive and Wi-Fi Support

YouTube from the AppleTV is great too, though there’s a slight out of sync issue with the audio, fine for music but not music videos where they move their lips!
There’s a setting you can tweak the delay if you have an iPhone, but as an Android guy I’m out of luck.

Ah well.

I published a relatively short piece on the ET3 here. Not intended as an exhaustive review, but might be enjoyable reading. I assume this is permissible- I don't take advertising and do few gear reviews, mainly focus on LPs, especially obscure ones, and archival care.

Only issue with your current setup is that the ET3's up sampling abilities are unavailable via USB output had you wished employing them.

True that.I was experimenting with the upsampling using other outputs and it did not sound bad at all. At some point, I'll figure out a way to go directly from the I2S on the Shanling and/or move other things around. I have an external clock coming too-- a fairly cheap unit--but I like to experiment when I'm not just listening for enjoyment. It took me a long time to get to the point where I stop constantly fiddling with the gear and analyzing it. Still, a valid point.

I think you don’t have to use the dedicated HDMI cable for your DIY I2S — too many thinnest wires, you don’t need them all. Seems better to use several thicker wires. The custom I2S cables are usually made this way.

“SyncLink” at the EddictPlayer is on?
Yes, it is. My friend has a new router on its way from the internet provider. Hope that helps 😉

Edit:
My friend received a new router from the internet provider, but it doesn’t look like it’s finding the ET3, when trying to connect to WiFi..

Any suggestions how to get it working? 😅

You said it worked in your place, so you could suppose what is the reason rather than anyone else.
Looking at the settings of your working setup this task isn’t impossible.
I would be glad to advise, but I don’t use WiFi at all.

The problem is to get the et3 connected to the WiFi, so we can stream. The difference is the router, I think. I use an Asus router and he use the one from the internet provider 😊

Then it might be useful asking that question to the provider as well:)

Since we're talking about streaming,
@Shanling , is there a possibility of including Gapless via DLNA/UPNP on the ET3 via a software update soon?

ET3 NEEDS BREAK-IN! sounded a bit edgy with bloated bass. ran it for a week on repeat and it tamed down and opened up nicely. do not judge the ET3 straight out of the box.

PS this was the most impactful "break-in" period of a component that i have experienced.
I agree with your assessment on the bass being over dominant out of the box, but that seems to have tamed pretty quickly with some use. I'm employing the ET3 now mainly to play hi-res files from an SSD. Once I got the Eddict app to connect (with help from Shanling support), it was a snap. Using the I2S connection (in my case, indirectly, through a DDC to a DAC (both Gustard)), I'm very taken with the quality of sound compared to my far more costly vinyl front end (Kuzma XL/Airline arm/Koetsu Tiger Eye/Allnic H3000 phono stage). I now actually listen to digital files with enjoyment, rather than treat them as a stop gap or warm up material for the system. The way this system was voiced (aimed at vinyl playback) using 4 woofer boxes-the two integrated into a pair of Avantgarde Duos and a larger pair of 15" sealed subs that have been DSP'd and roll off at 55hz on a steep curve (24db/octave), double bass normally sounds very real on a decent recording (I tend to play regular older copies, not "audiophile" reissues). The Shanling in this context can do this too--well dimensioned, deep bass with texture, rather than a "blob." I'm quite impressed by this relatively inexpensive piece of gear's performance after about a month of regular use on a system that will readily reveal sonic anamolies and the best part is that it doesn't sound overly analytical or clinical. As with vinyl playback, there is considerable source material variation from recording to recording, depending on the quality of the original recording (and I suppose how it was mastered- I'm very used to hearing differences among different "cuttings" of the same record by different engineers on LP). Some of the files are standard rez at 44.1 and also sound great.

I'm considering getting this player, but the not "true gapless" CD operation is setting off an alarm bell to me.

I had a streamer that was claimed to play gaplessly, but faked it by splicing tracks together. It would be apparently gapless on live recordings where the tracks changed during a lull in the performance, but on DJ mixes of electronic dance music, where tracks change during dense passages, the splice was jarring.

On the Shanling CR60 thread, a user reports that gaps are very briefly audible on that transport.

Are there any owners of the ET3 here that listen to House or Techno mix CDs? How does it perform with this type of material?

CR60 is using different drive from ET3 and they behave differently when it comes to gapless playback.

I have tried helping my friend getting the ET3 on WiFi. WiFi and Bluetooth is connected on both ET3 and iPhone. We have tried with both 2.4 and 5ghz network. It worked fine at my place, but not at his. He has been using other streamers etc. on WiFi without problems.

What can be the issue here?

Thanks
Henrik

As recommended by others, please check for Legacy mode on the router:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legacy_mode

It's sometimes needed for the first connection.

Unlikely, we have so far got no news on DLNA improvements from our software team.
