Shanling EH3 - Desktop DAC/AMP with Wi-Fi, USB Drive Playback and Flagship ESS ES9039PRO DAC
Oct 25, 2023 at 3:48 AM Post #61 of 260
Hi,
Interesting but of course hazardous.
Of course a "Limited Edition" with those might be of interest

All I can say is, as is, the EH-3 is already a really good device if you listen to it loud enough.
But it can do loud (and even beyond) so that is not a concern :)

For my needs, prior to changing AMPS or OP-AMPS, I would like to see those two things :
1°) for Shanling to fix the problem that appears when browsing the EH-3 through folders and where tracks are sometimes displayed beginning with track 07... and reejecting Track 01 at the end of the list ;
2°) have EQ possible in SyncLink.

If I would have that, the EH-3 would be close to perfection for my needs...

But unfortunately I do not think that #2 is a priority for Shanling.
And I am not even sure it is technically feasible :frowning2:

So let's hope for a fix in #1

Regards.

1) I hope we can figure out over PM where is the issue with your files.

2) There is no EQ on the EH3 itself, so if you want to use any, it always has to be provided by the app that manages the sound playback. SyncLink only acts as a sort of remote, so it can't support EQ.

Hi,

Yes, we're already working on the sorting of tracks in PM. Hope we can find where the problem lies : by the EH-3 or by the way the files are tagged. But I am sure this can be solved pretty easily.

Concerning EQ, I supposed there was no possibility to do it with SyncLink. Would have been nice though...
So as I said there are 2 ways to do it :
- 1°) use a device with UAPP or Neutron as a renderer (I use UAPP on my Tablet) hooked to EH-3 with USB cable ;
- 2°) use an app that can modifiy the sound wirelessly. The only app I know capable of doing this is Neutron. So I am using AK Connect to browse through EH-3 files (this is the fastest app I found to do it, even faster than Eddict) and send sound to Neutron (I am talking with Neutron support to find out why EH-3 is not listed as DLNA server).

As I said, so far, besides those "details" the EH-3 is working exactly as I would like it to play.

Regards.

Hello! I've just received my EH3, looks lovely in silver, matching the Meze Elite well.

Question: could you provide me/us a manual of how to take the unit apart so I can try to change the op-amps?

It's a single shell design by the looks of it.

Thank you very much for your help!

Cheers,

Feri

Hoihoi, a silly question: How do I register Eddict when it doesn't want to accept my phone number 0638..........? I cannot even input the +31 country code /it doesn't accept any special characters, numbers only/, tried with 0031 too, nothing works.

I cannot test it properly like this.

Many thanks!

You just don't. The registration is useless, it's just for mainland China users.

Salut @PenguinHeadphoner et merci beaucoup pour ton feedback complet.

At the end I'm a huge fan of Shanling hardware but for unknown reasons, software is on the works for years yet
still has not reached maturity to support a transparent user experience. Not sure Shanling would ever be able
to complete the software stack since they want to reimplement every single features on closed android -> OS but
the time/cost seems unbearable.

I love the design, this is full of shanling identity and pretty sure the inside and tuning is up to the game.

Hi,

De rien...

We share the same opinion : superb hardware with an added bonus : the nice looks
But software is not on par with hardware and thus makes the experience less nice :frowning2:

I would say that there are three categories of things that makes experience less enjoyable.

1°) EDDICT SOFTWARE "simple fixes"
I think there are here 2 features missing that should not be hard to integrate as a lot of free software does integrate those :
- a) display cover art of albums when browsing through an artist's albums list ;
- b) add the ability to display the albums by release year instead of only by name (I can rename the albums adding the year in front of it, but that is a workaround).

2°) EDDICT SOFTWARE "more difficult to add features"
These are probably a lot harder to add :
- a) more reliable connection to external DLNA/UPnP renderer ; here it keeps loosing connection, so you have no more control of playback ;
- b) ability to send EQ'd files like Neutron on Android or iMac does

3°) HARDWARE
I already mentioned that the settings in the EH-3 have some mis-translations in french.
That gives an impression of "unfinished business".
Shanling says the translation is provided by their french distributor.
I would advise to chnage translator :frowning2:

If 1°) would be achieved, Eddict would be more usable.
If 2°) was implemented, there would be no more need for me to look for third-party software.
If 3°) was corrected, perfection would be near

Hi,

Since some days there is another way to get EQ'ed sound to play to the Shanling EH-3.

The solution is super simple now but will cost 8€ (which I happily spent).
It will only work on Android though (as opposite to Neutron that will also play on iOS).

The app is called USB Audio Player Pro (UAPP).
The latest beta integrates a "Cast to" function.
That function detects the Eh-3 as a renderer.
AND : sound is sent WITH EQ correction !
Marvelous !!!!

I'm a very long Shanling users so I know about most of the brand shortcomings.

An EH3 should land tomorrow.
I'll spend sometime with it see how the experience goes.

I own every paid audio players in ios and android so I can try everything.
UAPP and Neutron benefit from a discrete software for rendering
like Shanling native player on Dap and we can hear the difference
on advanced hardware compared to solution like Plex.

Also one point of the EH3 is to act as a Streamer.
Using UAPP or Neutron remove the responsability yet EH3 is still
priced on projection of what it should be, not what works for user.

FIIO is also working on a vertical integration, they're able to put EQ on their software
Pretty sure Shanling will give up on the software completeness and launch new machines while offering minimal maintenance.
We'll never see the EH3 full potential but maybe in 2 years a EH5 will be features complete.
Please Shanling, prove me wrong!

Thank you for all the informations you share here, I would not have engaged with EH3 product
without you.

On pourra échanger sur nos expériences!

EH3 is not running Android, it's using our own system, similar to our portable players.

How does the EH3 tonality compare to various Shanling DAPs?

Did you ever share somewhere the size of hardware/software team working on whole products?
No, that's internal information only.

Hi,

I own the M6, M6 Pro and M8 shanling DAP's.

They all sound lovely.
Warm yet detailed sound.

The EH-3 is, to my ears, a little different.
It sure has the Shanling "sound signature", but to say how it is different nonetheless, it's sound is detailed, yet warm.

Please note that the EH-3 is totally "unfogiving".
If your record is badly mastered, do not expect the EH-3 to enhance it.
It will just emphasize the defects as it will the qualities...

So if you start listen to it with a really bad record, you may be disappointed :)

EH3 landed this afternoon.

Compared to Shanling Dap, it's much more resolving more separation of layers but you won't get the lush texture of M6 Pro or M8.
Sound if more refined, more extended and enjoyable at first listening of all my gears from buds, in-ears, headphones.
First listening session and it is a keeper.

My most current setup is Audirvana -> EH3 and BT is working instantly too.

Now the very very frustrating part... Shanling software. Tech sawy that I am, I found myself battling to connect wifi from an IPhone
The manual and device label are different in the app. User experience is the worst I've seen. Pretty sure it's the programmers that
decide of the ergonomics and nothing is clear.

Also I'm dumbfounded that there is no USB-C entry in 2024 on such device.

I'm probably keeping it because I got it second hand but it's far for the asked price
because of the software experience. You want to listen music not debug and learn someone else uncommon sense of ergonomics.
Subject is recurrent, Shanling should ask for UX consultant because it kill the potential of the product.

Just an exemple of the stupid case we face as user:
My Iphone cannot send the network wifi distribution... the first field is not filled with info unlike android.
Imagine that! So many Iphone users fighting for the first basic stuffs. You pay that much money to
debug bugs on the first 5 mins of use.

Yet fantastic sound...

Is this a kind of torture?

Update: impossible to add a device to shanling app on Ios nor Android.
- Device is present on android BT list but now in Shanling App how ?
- Synclink not working (infinite screenloading)
- wifi distribution got the wifi name bugged (enter ssid message)on ios
- wifi distribution won't complete on Android, timeout

I'm stuck. Firmware 1.3.

I see the previous owner devices. Pretty sure he send the EH3 back because he can't connect too :/
