How would you compare the house sound tuning /SQ to a Shanling M8?

These ESS based DACs will always be a bit different from the older AKM sound like on the M8. So even when we still try to tune them to our preferred warmer sound, they end up being more enrgetic, more dynamic, than the calmer AKM based designs.

On sound quality alone, EH3 definitely a step above M8.

When will it be available?

Shipping now to distributors, please check with your nearest Shanling dealer.

Please can I disable the DAC filters like NOS?

No such function on EH3.

Any specific reason it has Airplay 1 and not Airplay 2?

If anyone made a dac/amp with system EQ and Airplay 2, I’d buy it in a heartbeat

Our software team does not think Airplay 2 support is needed, so they haven't implemented it in any of our devices so far.

any update on if this can be used with an expanse?
can you share the maximum power output to get an idea of how much headroom I would have?

is this discrete, how do you compare it’s internals to the toppingA70 which sounds awful with the Expanse

Sorry, we don't have access to these headphones to test. Not really present on Chinese market.

Output power is 5.3W @ 32 Ohm

You can find all details on its product page: https://en.shanling.com/product/440

Sorry, can't offer any comparison to Topping.

Hi,

This device looks interesting and is offered for a decent price (if it fits my needs that are a little special).

I am considering it, but would like to ask a few questions.

1°) It is advertised as being usable with DLNA/UPnP. Does it mean that I can use this as a "target" or "renderer" ? I assume that means that Eddict player can retrieve files from an UPnP/DLNA server (say Emby or Plex) and send them to the EH-3 over Wi-Fi ? Is that correct ?

2°) If 1°) is correct, would I be able to use it as a renderer with third-party software like Bubble UPnP (which offers more convenient features than Eddict player to sort albums and tracks) ?

2°a) If I can use the EH-3 as a renderer, what "input" should I select ? On the manual it says that I can toggle between USB/Optical/Coaxial/Blutooth/Aux" but not DLNA or something like that :frowning2:

3°) If I can use it as a renderer with third party software, do you know if that will function as it should ? I used to have the EA-5. Fantastic device, but the "renderer" part was not good : playback stopped after some tracks... Unless I used Eddict (but not really convenient).

4°) I assume that, like the H7 (that I liked but that unfortunatley does not fit my needs :frowning2: ) if I want to access files stored on a USB drive or stick attached to it, I will have to use SyncLink. What I could not do if I did that on the H7 was to enable EQ. Is there some way to use EQ (whatever it is) when reading files from the USB stick or hard drive connected ?If it can be used as renderer, I can apply EQ with Neutron on "origin" device, but would be nice to be able to be able to do it on destination directly.

If answers are reasonably optimistic, I will probaly ask the shop if I can trade my H7 for the EH3... Of course, I'd like an EM7, but my wallet can not go that high :frowning2:

Thanks for your attention.

Hi,

If your question is, "Will the EH-3 be powerful enough to drive my Expanse headphones" the answer is probably in the numbers.
This device is given to ouput over 5W in 4.4mm balanced mode.
I think that 5W are enough to drive ANY HEADPHONES, even the most deamnding ones...

So I assume you'll be on the safe side with such output power.

Now, will this sound good when it drives Expanse ?
That is of course another story and my answer would be that, as long as you did not listen for yourself, any answer will be be pure speculation...

All I can say is that Shanling devices generally offer a good sound quality, but that people may find it a little too warm, which means that it is probably not the most neutral sound on earth. But given you do not like the Topping A70 which is probably one of the most transparent devices on earth, you may like the Shanling sound :)
AFAIC, I do love the sound.

So I'd say if the features of this device are attractive to you, you should give it a try...

1) Yes, it supports DLNA and you can use Eddict player app to access local server and play it to EH3 over Wi-Fi.

2) Other DLNA apps can work with EH3, but there might be some issues with certain apps or features.

3) EH3 at this time behaves the same as EA5, some apps are unable to progress to next song. Our software team says they might check on 3rd party apps compatibility in the future.

4) EH3 has no built-in EQ.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your answers.

It supports DLNA with Eddict player => Cool.

Third-party app should work but no guarantee they'll be 100% functional => as I am mainly looking for a more efficient way to sort my albums => Cool

Some 3d party-apps may be unable to progress to next song => OUCH... But : I've been in touch with the developper of 2 apps, and they have worked together to try to solve the problem. Maybe that will have an impact on the EH-3 too. If I get it (probably) I'll report here if people are interested (or if you, at Shanling, are interested).

No EQ => OUCH ! That is the major issue :frowning2: => But to my knowledge there is one app, Neutron, that can send a file with EQ integrated... Not sure how they achieve this but that may be a way to circumvent the problem. For the next days, I'll test Neutron "in-depth" to see if it works and, again, if interested, I'll report here.

Regards.
