Sennheiser x Massdrop HD6XX Review / Preview - Head-Fi TV

I'm very interested, but I have no idea if my current sources can power this properly. I'm coming from an HD598, and I have:

  • HTC 10
  • Fiio E11

Can either of these drive the HD6xx properly?

From past experience you'll end up with a headache asking that question. It's up to your ability to hear any significant changes in quality and what you're expecting or have heard previously. I'm sure the Fiio will give you enough volume but only you can decide what sounds good to you.

I own the 650 and am running it off a 100mw + 100mw amp and have to turn the volume almost right up on high gain. It sounds good but it could sound better, but I only know it can sound better because of past experience with a different amp.

I have the LCD-2, HE560, T90, K7XX, Oppo PM-2 and PM-3 and the HD650 always gets the most head time with me...for $199 it's the bargain of 2016. I cannot recommend getting this one enough....

Awesome value for money.

I certainly understand the excitement over this project, as I share in it. Even though I already own a pair of 650's, I'll certainly buy these for several reasons. My only quibble, why the dark blue color instead of a blackout edition in matte. That would have been incredible sexy and in line with other projects from MD. Oh well, I'm grateful anyway.

They are pretty butt looking, unfortunately. Good news is I'm not tempted to spend the money now.

In my experience the HD600 and HD650 need about 3 VRMS to sound 'right' they do benefit from more power, but that is my minimum that I've noted full enough drive. That translates into 300mW into 32 ohms.

The HTC10 absolutely can't do it. You'll get sound, but that isn't really driving a headphone. The FiiO E11 outputs 200mW into 32 ohms (2.53 VRMS), so I would say that neither of your sources have enough power to competently drive the HD6xx. Other folks disagree with me and think that the Mojo can drive the HD600 well. The Mojo only outputs 180mW into 32ohms (2.4 VRMS).

For all my conversions (the numbers above aren't all listed specs) I used this calculator: http://owenduffy.net/calc/voltcnv.htm.

Damn, just what I was thinking... HD 700's anyone?
Easy, get rid of the 700 and buy the 6XX.

Edit: To be more clear, the 700 is like the person child of the 800, I don't see any point in having both. The 650 will be a much better pair of phones to compliment the 800.

"This drop is limited to 5,000 units. The first 500 purchasers will receive a pair of headphones with a serial number under 550."

is 550 and under inscribed or something

No, all the units will have a serial number printed on the inside of the band somewhere.  What they're saying is that if you're one of the first 500 buyers, that serial number is guaranteed to be a number under 550 (not related to which order number you were though, just some number in that group so you could be Order #500 and get SN #7), and if you're after the first 500 buyers you'll get a serial number above 550.
