The HD800s and the Dupont mod go to far, in my opinion. The best HD800 mod I've heard is simply lining the cups with lambswool felt. It's simple, reversible, and tames the peaks without sacrificing soundstage like the HD800 and Dupont mods do. I've never bought the HD800 only because I'd want to modify it and then I wouldn't be able to use it as a reference in reviews. The HD800s loses bass texture while upping warmth and bass volume when compared to the HD800. The original is still better to my ears, and I've heard lots of modded and originals.Oh but it most certainly is.
It was born of a handful of HD800 users being unsatisfied with how the sound reflects inside the HD800 and so they set out to make a mod to improve said reflections.
Sennheiser simply took that mod and integrated it into the HD800S in a more professional way.

A more expensive but totally external mod is the RME ADI-2 DAC parametric EQ
The good thing is it works with all possible headphones and amps
