MX980 upgrade cable
Hi golov17,

Yesterday I saw your post made a view years ago about a cable replacement for the Sennheiser MX 980. Also posted were pictures of the earbuds taken apart.

1) Could you give some advice on how to take these earbuds apart?. Did you gently pup open them with a sharp knife or someting like that?

2) I also wonder if there is glue involved and if it takes some force. Looking at the pictures it seems that way.

Years ago i made some add on molds for the MX 980 which i still use. They pop in easy, resulting in a stable fixed position of the buds. Can't live without them anymore.

Made them cause i can't stand in-ears and wanted buds that stay in! and position consistently
Sadly the cable is coming apart although they still work.

i need to replace the cable sooner or later.Sweat would break out if i tried this out on my working pair. :triportsad:
Some advice would be very much appreciated.
If you happen to know where i can get a broken pair of 980 that would be great too! Nice to have a pair to practice on.
I'm new to this forum so i'm not allowed to show you a picture of the molds i ques.

best regards
Jan

these are things of bygone days .. there are some photos left to understand the process .. link
Awesome work and this Is beyond what I am willing to do and capable off. I am trying to upgrade the cable to my E484 and it isn’t easy to do. The solder pads are very fragile so I decide to leave it as is. Thanks again for sharing the pictures. The MX980 is a very natural sounding headphones and I am so glad to listen to it again.

Can u remember if the stock 980 cable has 4 wires? I may just reterminate it for a balanced connection. I managed to reterminate the E888 with a 4.4 mm jack and it dis benefit from a balanced amplification.

Senn has three wires below the volume control, e484 is not difficult to disassemble, but dampers inside the housing may need to be replaced

Thank you and I appreciate the quick reply. Pity that Senn didn’t run 4 wires all the way to the plug. 4.4 mm balanced will do a lot of good to this earphones. Yes, E484 isn’t that difficult to deal with compared to your work on the 980

Could you confirm if Senn has four wires above the volume control before the Y-connector? Thank you again.

Thanks. I meant between the Y connector and the volume control slider. You really should reterminated your earbuds with 4.4 mm balanced. I just reterminated my E565 with 4.4 mm today and they sound glorious out of my mod ZX507 balanced output.
