I don't really feel the Sennheiser ie900 scales. It's warmth and low presence dip kind of mask somethings.
Scales well with my humble Diablo-Cayin HA-300ii setup. Really enjoyable in fact!

It has consistently surprised me at how outstandingly it performs especially when stacked up against high end multi-driver IEMs.

Nice!!

And do you find that doing this helps with the insertion depth of your tips? How have you found that sound has changed since your mod?

Lastly, cable looks lovely - what is it 🤪

It definitely helps when trying to use the outer position on the Sennheiser tips. Otherwise, the tips slip back to the inner position when I put them in my ears. Still very early, but it seems to reduce the sub-bass while enhancing the treble, giving the 900s a more tonal balanced sound. The 5 mm ID is a bit looser than I expected, so I might pop back over to my hardware store for 4.5 mm ones. At a quarter each, another pair won't break the bank.

The cable is a Plussound X6. I opted for the SPC version. Be aware that if you order IE900 termination, you can't get different colors--only black, even though you can order it that way. I really like this cable. Great quality for the price.

EDIT: I find the primary effect of the outer tip position to widen the stereo field. Bass might be a little bit less, if at all. Not really hearing a difference now. With the Sennheiser pro tips and the foam removed, the treble is the best I've heard out of the IE900! Highs are very smooth and a bit more prominent.

Could you please show some close up pics on the connectors you filed? I have a superbax and would like to try out this mod to use with my ie900.

Not the most elegant of solutions. Though not noticable from far away.

Thinking about doing this with my superbax. How do they sound vs the stock cable?

While we are on the subject of modifying MMCX connectors, I found this one very easy to modify. The MMCX plug covering is rubber and cuts off easily with a sharp knife.

The cable is very similar in construction to the stock cable, just slightly softer and a bit more flexy if you know what I mean and no ear hooks for those that prefer that. :) Its on offer at Amazon UK at the moment too. Not a boutique cable by any means but I like it.

In this iem's scenario, they help me significantly with the fit.

In this case, I can't differentiate what is from the better fit without earhooks/memory wire & what sound nuances is due to the cable.

I did a short A/B comparison between acoustune hs2000mx and ie900 using ak ca1000 streaming from tidal a few days ago. Both are excellent single DD driver iems and priced similarly. I like the hs1000mx, but for me, the ie900 excels in both bass presentation and sounds more spacious. Ie900 also is much smaller and easier to wear. It's my favourite uiem for the moment!

Could you please make a short comparison between ie900 and kse1200? I wonder how close is the ie900 to the electrostatic earphone.

my heavily biased opinion - no iem i heard touches the greatness of kse1200 :)

it's super coherent and musical. music just flows from it naturally. when i first bought it, i non-stop listened for 3 hrs! this is the best iem i've listened to by a very far margin. not only the strength is superb, even the relatively "weak" point like bass attack/slam is still quite adequate. the real down sides for me are all ergonomic - the need to carry an energizer (one more piece that needs to be charged!) and the not insubstantial cable coupled with the ultra light ear bugs itself. for the price of kse1200 (particularly 2nd hand), it's a bargain that no one should overlook.

ie900 wins hands down on ergonomic side and also about craftsmanship. the plastic shell of kse1500 (both kse1200/1500 come with the same earbuds) looks quite cheap - and for those obsessed about place of manufacturing, i suspect kse1200 is made in china (vs germany/ireland for ie900). i think maybe the ie900 projects somehow bigger soundstage too.

Thank you! I have the KSE1200 and I LOVE it but I thought I could simplify my setup (I also don't like the fact I need the energizer) with another earphone that could come close to the electrostatic sound of the Shure. But I guess it won't happen and I will keep my 1200 for a very long time :)
