Sennheiser IE900 Review, Measurements, & Harman Target Talk

Not gonna lie. These seem a bit hyped, but I’ll order one when it’s available in the US. Sennheiser from my experience does know a thing or two about how to tune their headphones. I’ve been looking for a nice dynamic driver to compliment the IER-Z1R as I can’t quite stand the “Multi-BA” sound.

Is it possible to preorder these in the US? The website just says coming in June. I’ll expect them to perform just a little above the Etymotic ER-2s which i actually hold in high regard. Don’t forget folks, according to Barry Schwartz, the secret to happiness is LOW expectations.

Can anyone comment a bit more about the midrange compared to other IEMs particularly the Z1R where possible? I’ll contend that the Z1Rs do have a mid range that sits a tad back in the soundfield and can be a tad less authoritative on male vocals, but it is always crystal clear and detailed. I’ve seen sporadic comments that the midrange of the IE900 is not as detailed as other parts of the frequency spectrum relative to other TOTL IEMs.

Wow. I wasn't aware these aren't available to order in the US anymore. I preordered mine on May 11th, and mine is scheduled to arrive tomorrow according to UPS tracking. I'm in the US. So are all the people that have received their IE900 so far all located outside of US excluding the ones with pre release units?

Curious as to why you think these are a bit hyped?

Canadian order here just received.
I use a WM1A and run an HD800 and HDV820 as my main desk setup. Have a couple of closed cans but haven't had ear buds since I sold my set of JH13 pros many years ago.

I was primarly looking for a few things in a portable set:
  • Sound characteristics/quality close to HD800S or at least not a big departure from it. This delivers in spades, comes short in terms of speed and and size of the stage but that's expected. The speed is close enough that I don't miss it.
  • Treble harshness: Can't have this in any form, threw in a bunch of my slightly treble happy tracks at this, came out shining, no issues.
  • Fit - easy and painless.
  • Durable, no fuss warranty. Always been happy with Sennheiser quality and workmanship and most of their headphones I tried (except HD700 which sounds like a banshee and HD820 for which I just couldn't get a proper fit). Have had other Sennheiser cans for 10+ years and they still look and perform as new (expect pads of course).
  • Sound quality, not even going to try to match the descriptions that everybody else can do here from a technical perspective, I'm just not qualified. I have a fairly bland way of rating cans - I compare to the ones I know and see what's different. In this case it sounds great and feels like I'm taking my HD800S around trading a little soundstage and speed for a slightly more fun but just as clean signature.
I reckon I'm approaching this from a different perspective than most earbud owners but if you're use case is similar to mine, this works pretty well.

Some additional details:
  • The packaging could have used extra tips and a hard shell but it does come with three cables including a 4.4mm balanced.
  • Serial number on the box but not the actual earbuds (or at least couldn't find it).
  • Feels great in the hands.
It's a keeper for me.

@James-uk , as a fellow Shure KSE user, I'd love to get your impressions after your honeymoon period is up with the IE 900. I'm holding out for the day I don't need to lug around the KSE's energizer anymore, but haven't had a pair come close in performance (tried Z1R, Luna, Anole VX, Xelento, CL2, and nothing holds a candle to it). It doesn't sound like the IE 900 trumps the KSE in detail/resolution, but sounds like it gets pretty darn close. You thinking it could replace your KSE, or more like a good addition to your collection?
It’s still to early to say for sure but I think the KSE might collect dust now. The IE900 is more enjoyable without giving much away in terms of resolution (if anything at all)

Thanks. Much appreciate the short and concise impression absent of silly metaphors and hyperboles avid members like to sprinkle to showcase their audiophile prowess :o2smile:.

Jokes aside, your descriptions are just fine. Personally, user impressions without hype have more "takeaway" than monetized youtube reviews.

So I have used IE900 for about 2 days now, no complaints about the sound. It is pretty much what I expected, an all-rounder with exceptional bass. I will probably be using it more than the Z1R going forward, as it has no major weaknesses and fixes the 2 issues I have with the Z1R.

Comfort is great, the insertion is very shallow (for someone who is used to the Z1R and Blessing 2) but somehow it still sounds good with no apparent leakage - this is with the foam tips.

Overall fit however I would rate it 7/10 because I find the stock cable and ear hook very hard to tame. Personally I would have preferred a soft cable that naturally hangs from the ear.

I refused to believe the bad rap about Digital River/Sennheiser USA.
All I can say is about it like Covid.
My IE900 were supposed to be delivered via UPS 2nd day delivery today, however, they were not able to do it due to incomplete address..... I checked Digital River's confirmartion emails and my address was correct.
Then, I called Digital River/ Sennheiser and I asked a supervisor to hold them for pick up at the UPS station and they refused to do so....
The interesting part is thay they do allow you to lift the signature restriction for delivery.....😡

Not sure how applicable my experience is here in the UK, but DR gave me a UPS tracking number and the package was labelled and delivered by DHL.

I should probably not bash DR too hard as they have handled all (3-4) of my orders rather competently, but it's when there is an issue you can tell the good retailers from the bad ones.

Good. This is precisely what I'm looking for with the IE900.

Still the honeymoon period :)

If I didn't just buy a Utopia, I would jump on these right now. Gives me an excuse to wait for more impressions, haha.

So After a good 40minutes of listen I cant hold my self then bring some impressions of my new aqcuisition!

I was very pleased with the unboxing experience it feels premium and like you bought a very high quality equipment. The quality check card or certificate is a nice touch, reminds me of my hd800s personal sound frequency graph that came in the box 😛

The iem it self is very solid and offer a good option with cable selection, so you can hook it basically to anything out of the box 👍

A little bummer about the cable as I find it very microphonic I would call it 8/10 high noise. The solution I found to kill the microphonics was to raise the chin holder near your neck. This way it have eliminated 90% of the noise from the cable taps and knocks. I am saying this as I never used chin holders in any of my cables before. I think the jacket is stiff thats what causes the taps to go all the way up.

About the ear tips oh lalala the foamies are my favorite! I am using the medium ones. Its very awesome as it slide in my ear and I have no need to squize or press the foamies at all to get them in.
All I do is gently press it inwards and it holds and takes a tight snugy fit all while being comfortable and not to much outward pressure.

Interesting fact with the eartips I am very great full to the folks who mentioned it on the thread as I didnt know it had 2 locking position and I am right now in huge debate and decisional fights lmao should it be in more extended position or the short one??? The thing is I like both WAYS!
When you set it in extended positions I feel very vast and deep soundstage the sound get bigger deeper more vast, almost like you are expanding your sense of the ambiente perception in the holographiness in sound dimensions. Very impressive! But you do get some treble elevation loss here, it get slightly less trebly

When you set the eartip to short extension you get a some what more intimate sound with a more emphasis on treble and also the sound atmospheric perception is now not as vast but you get a more closer presentation now and things explode and get more fun here.
Really both way are very amazing and I guess I will simply play with the position of the eartip to get the desired sound type along my mode 🙃😃

Ok now about the famous silicon eartips 😅😅😅 oh ummm well I dont like them sorry, they sound very off and odd. Specially if you are jumping from the foamies to the silicone then you are guaranteed to be very disappointed. The sound just get thin very super open airy almost like a open back headphones simulation. I am not saying you cant listen with those tips but it feels like they are wrong and not right at all here. Maybe folks who want absolutely a reference and as unaltered sound possible will love it? Maybe for work at studio? But for audiophiles is definitely the foamies!
Oh and foamies has very good isolation which is a must for me 😃👍

About the comfort !
Just wow 15/10 yes yes 5 points over so I guess 150% success 😍🥰
They are so comfy that they simply drowning in my ears to a point that I forget about them and when I have to take it out they dont want to lmao. They are small and I need to pull them by the mmcx base then I grab them by the frame. Yes very comfortable and impressive even! High isolation and superb comfort.

Ok fellas soon might have more impressions to come 🎊🎉😛 we are only igniting the Tiger yet 🤣
