So I just got my hdva600. So after a few songs I and was wondering what gain setting does everyone prefer balanced out w/ hd800s?

I thought that gain switch on the back was just for RCA-out, not balanced?

That's true.  RCA input gain is adjustable from 14 dB to 46 dB.  XLR input gain is fixed at 16 dB.

NOMAX

Sure does!!  I have mine on now listening to the album "Dr. Chesky's Sensational, Fantastic, and Simply Amazing Sound Show" via USB port from PC,  and when I started listening, what I heard was so realistically speaker-like that I reached out to switch the sound from my speakers to my headphones... but it was already coming from my headphones, just imaged in front of me and with the separation that I associated with my speakers!!! (and this is after 8 months of having the HD 800 and HDVD 800 - you'd think I'd know better!).

Could any HDVD 800 owners tell me if the line output is muted when plugging in a pair of headphones? Ill be using the DAC section with the amp from my WA7 and want have the ability to switch between the two by just unplugging and plugging headphone out.

Picked up a new HDVD 800 today for $1400aud which i thought was quite a good deal

Line out is always on, and fixed volume. You'll have to mute or turn off your speaker amp when using headphones.

+1 recommendation for the Nordost Heimdall 2 cable for the HDVD-800 and HD-800 setup. I had other DACs before replacing the one in the HDVD-800 as it sounded too harsh. This cable significantly improved the sound, deeper bass, higher treble, cleaner, more detailed sound beside the usual advantages of the HD-800, like soundstage. Tkae this post with care as I could have compared it only to the stock jack cable, which is far, far behind the Heimdall 2.Now, I am selling my other components and will keep the HDVD-800 only. Sure, with external DACs the could probably be better somewhat, but for me more simple setup at the expense of a bit of a sound downgrade is acceptable.

Can anyone help me if it is worth the money to replace the power cord of the HDVD-800. General rule I found is that power cord replacement should be the first step and it may improve the sound significantly. I would be happy to see whether this really matters in this case. Thanks.

Passives won't do with HDVA as end stage, too high impedance output. I'm not aware of any speaker transducer made today with 100+ ohms on it.
It has pre outs though, which sadly have no vol control.

So, the lowest gain for RCA input on HDVD800 is the best soundwise? I ask because it seems unusual for me, at least my Fiio X5 definitely sounds better with HI GAIN.

If it's a analog input imp adjustment . So what ever sounds best to,you. Making it as loud as possible before it gets distorted at the loudest passages . But gain listen for yourself not as others tell, you. Also here is fact you may not know. Louder always sounds better than softer . So adjusting purely on loudness is not the best way to go about it.

A few thoughts. I love the HDVA600. I read somewhere that buying it for the HD800 is basically like buying the Beyerdynamic A1 for the T1.

No. Just, no. Don't let ill informed comments like those dissuade you from trying this amp.

I like gain setting 2 best for the HD600. I like gain 3 and higher for Audeze headphones and Mr. Speaker headphones.

That said, the HDVA600 is pretty expensive. Has anyone heard any other amp that sounds like the HDVA600 but costs less?
