Sennheiser HD800 Appreciation Thread

The LL amp brings up the fun on the 009 close to the 800s level but it takes a micro detail hit to do so IMHO.  The SS changes little if any.

In my system and with my preferences the 009s (with the LL of course) are taking the cake with all my music. And after doing some math...I think the mafia might have another member.

Oh, my son, you have gone over to the dahhrk side.  Or, maybe, it's the bright side.

009s are extremely detailed, but clinical and flat. HD800s are quite a bit more enjoyable, IMO. The pair are similar, but where HD800 has the massive encompassing soundstage with pinpoint imaging, the 009s have a smaller soundstage and have a flatter presentation and have a drier signature.

Time for conclusions. The 009s are brighter comparing system to system. I have a feeling the Cavalli amps absolutely tame them both to listenable for me.

The one thing that is obvious to me is the HD800 has superior staging, but unfortunately it's made me notice how 'shelved' some instruments sound sometimes.

I will if course listen more.

I have both. The 009 with the SRM-727II and the HD800 with a fully upgraded WA5-LE. I love both and keeping both.

BTW the W3000ANV with the Woo is magical too for closed headphone.

I think what I'm going to do is try and audition a Stax 4070. Closed stats? Hmmm.

Also I think I'll invest a little next year in a little tube amp and Grados for the girlfriend. Little treat for me if I get the dynamic itch.

To be honest since I bought the Stax set it has been difficult to find time to listen to my other systems.
I think the WA5-LE with my HD800, W3000ANV and T1 sounds great as well as my Dark Star with the HE-6 but there is something in the clarity and detail of the Stax rig that is addictive.

HD800 + LF and 009 + LL in the house...Man I love the HD800s...but damn this is impressive.

So far I've come to this conclusion...The 009 reminds me a lot of the HD800 and I think the 009s sound like everything people want the HD1000 to be. A flat out better across the board HD800.

Between the HD 800 and 009, which do you find easier to enjoy?

So its been a while since I posted here but still happy with my HD800 :) My rig just seems to sound right to me and it would cost a lot to hopefully get better so I'm thinking this is where I stop since it's been months since I changed anything in my rig.

From a 'variety of setups and accessibility standpoint'? HD800. From a pure 'cans on the head for the first time' view? 009s. This is assuming the content your listening to isn't really poorly recorded as they'll all provide a somewhat sub-par experience due to both being very revealing.

The more forward instruments will absolutely reach out and grab more people with the 009 + LL. Though I could see a mostly Classical listener picking the HD800 due to the superior staging being so obvious.

Thanks for writing that, MT. I love the HD 800 and would love to hear the 009.

I'm really enjoying using the HD 800 with the hifi amp on my desk which is nice to have the option to switch to from my Lavry - a new sound is just one slot away!

I look forward to checking out the amp recommendations in this thread more thoroughly.

The LF would still be my choice. It seems fans of the LF are eventually doomed to own an LL, too. :D

It really is a fantastic amp for the HD800...and anything else you throw at it for that matter.

I really love it how when I don't analyze the sound of the HD 800 and instead listen to recordings with it more passively, the sound from the HD 800 is simply awesome!

If I didn't know better I'd say you work for Sennheiser Windsor :p

Nah, Windsor has been pretty fair and gone back and forth w/ other dynamic phones being best/better.  I wouldn't consider him a 'fanboy' though he might turn into one eventually.
