How do these sound with somewhat poorly recorded late 70s rock-metal, and 80's hair bands, glam and metal? Am I better off sticking with my 58X for this? I'm close to pulling the trigger, but don't want to make a mistake.
I'm just concerned because they are a cleaner, clearer, more articulate headphone than the 58X, and that usually doesn't fair well with poorly recorded hard rock music.

That's what I use mine for because it's the only type of music I like and metal. You do hear the bad recordings of course with this headphone but it's still enjoyable just like listening to them on 650. I enjoy the sugar coating.

Basically, yes! Actually, even most good full range speakers don’t go much below 30-40kHz, but what you get with a speaker is the physical punch of the low frequencies plus room reinforcement so it always feels like they go lower than they do. Add a sub and of course you actually get the lowest frequencies. Many people prefer planer magnetics precisely because of their bass extension, but in my experience they sacrifice mid range tonal accuracy and naturalness. Personally I’d rather have the more speaker like roll off in the bass than forfeit great mids.
