Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Jesus, wouldn't it be easier to just use a bit of EQ than to massacre the HP? :relaxed:. No offense.
None taken. I find modding a fun part of the hobby and destroying 650 resale value is sometimes part of the cost. EQ takes away some of the challenge but applying EQ proficiently is another challenge.

Initially I just tried duplicating JAR mods because they appear basic. Triangulating solely against other frequency response measurements I think I was successful. Sound difference is mainly a matter of damping the driver rear pole vent. Im betting the more striking visual mods are just psychological or very audibly insignificant.

After that I tried to mod to make 600 + 650 listenable to me which is what you see above. 600 reacts very differently from 650 to the same mods. Since I believe potential is limited anyway I decided to sell 600 and be content with 650 mod that would be difficult to sell anyway.

I attach the mapping of my HD650. Slider resolution 2.5 dB (7.5dB at 25Hz). I'm still working on this curve, great to hear with the Violectric V200 and DAC schiit.

I have completed 150+ hours of burn in on the 2 week old 6XX and sound has stayed the same since hour 70.
Burn in is now completed.

I purchased the Sundara and will be making a comparison between the two.

No new amp or dac or cables.
Just the 6xx and Sundara in my current rig.

Edit:
The clear, tubey, midrange of the 6xx can be heard from 20 FEET AWAY in another room. The magic midrange is audible from a distance!

I've got a question about different versions of the HD600

It seems like there's the all-black version that's still for sale today, and then there's the older marbled/speckled version. Of the marbled versions, I'm having a hard time determining if there was a blue marbled version and a grey marbled version, or just a grey marbled version that looks blue in certain light. Even looking at pictures taken by the same person of the same exact headphone, sometimes they look blue, sometimes they look grey.

Can anyone clarify for me? Were there two different marbled HD600 colors, one grey and one blue, or just one marbled color that sometimes looks grey and sometimes looks blue?

Sorry, but which case is right?
There are two versions: the latter black version (I think since 2021) and the former grey-blue marble version, thou that version has different drivers depending of the date of release, but all with the same color scheme.

Different drivers?? Are you sure about that? Why would they still call it an HD 600 if they have different drivers. To me that's a different phone altogether.

What until you hear about the "silent revision" shenanigans Hifiman gets up to

This kinda stuff is not only common in this industry, but pretty much all industry

In my opinion you should stick with the newest black version. The pads on the newest version are better being thicker, firmer and sounding sonically better. They will also last longer.
Or get the older version and buy new pads? Most agree that all 6xx pads need to be replaced periodically to maintain their sonic qualities...

I'm sorry, I didn't express the best I could. Different material (silk or paper, depending on the version) used for the driver, not exactly different drivers.

The word "silk" remind to me about "Silksong" :relieved:
