I might get Stax L300 as an upgrade to my HD 650s. If anyone has heard them or any dark sounding Stax , can you compare both?

Living with Stax Lambdas (404LE and 407) and HD650s for several years, I certainly find reasons to own both. Sinking into the Stax, improvements in truth of timbre, texture, touch, graceful and natural dynamic flow, real instruments in space, the perception of hall sound even in "silence", are obvious. HD650s are immediately and easily enjoyable, will seem full and punchy in comparison, and are very genre friendly

Steely, cheap digital front ends won't play well with Stax.

Don't know of a "dark" Stax, but frequency response "comparisons" don't touch what they are doing.

I've had my SRD-34 since 1983, still one of my favorites and used once or twice a week since its just an enjoyable sound. Its faster sounding than my HD650, bass extends lower and has no mid bass hump but quantity might be lacking for some, highs are well extended and smooth like a high end Grado with better sound stage/imaging. Also had SR009 for a few years but found them to be limited since they really need high quality source files or they don't sound very good, sort of like the HD800 and T1 where its too detailed and not forgiving that you only really want to listen to high quality recordings.

Can anyone recommend a good amp/dac combo for the 6xx? currently looking at a Schiit Stack of the 3/2, the o2/odac combo, or anything else recommended around ~250-300$

MImby $249
Magni $99

This stack at $348 is so worth the stretch; the Mimby detail retrieval and natural presentation will be beautifully shown with the HD6XX.

If you are stretching, this is used and a bit more, but very versatile and sounds great, IMO, with HD6XX:

I'd suggest only getting an amp first and save up for the DAC over time since the amp will have more impact on the sound IMO than the DAC at the prices you are considering. For amps look at Garage 1217 Solstice, Sunrise III, or Ember if you are okay with dealing with one tube but if you prefer SS then the Polaris. If you are okay with building then get a BH Crack since its currently $300 but you will end up spending a bit more for tubes so I'd recommend to budget another $300+ for tubes. Other amps to consider are LD 2 and DV 336 besides all the others mentioned above.

The mimby/Magni combo is fantastic for the money. Most normal people can't hear the difference between usb implementations in DACs (me included). If you happen to be one of those rare individuals that can, you you can spend more monty later. The Mimby seems to hold its value well.

Slight budget stretch, but sounds tremendous with HD 6XX: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-cth-sdac-dac-amp

You can get the amp-only version a little cheaper for $250 if you want to go with @DavidA's suggestion and start with just the amp.
